Sachin Tendulkar’s phone call inspired Ajinkya Rahane

Sachin called Ajinkya Rahane before his captaincy debut against Australia

Rahane took over the reigns of the test team in the final test of the series. Virat Kohli’s shoulder injury forced the change of captaincy for the Dharamshala test. Ajinkya Rahane became India’s 33rd test captain. The burden of captaincy was new for the classy batsman from Mumbai. A call from the God himself, Sachin Tendulkar, reassured Rahane and inspired him. Rahane lead the team to victory in Dharamshala.

Rahane captained the Indian side in the fourth test

Regarding the captaincy and the call from Tendulkar, Rahane said “It was a proud moment for me, but the mood was sombre in the dressing room because of Virat’s injury. He inspired all of us with his confidence and support despite the injury. As a captain, I knew I am a different person and everybody has their own style as captain. On the ground, I knew I had seniors with me, but at the end, I had to take calls. Throughout the match, I wanted to follow my style. Before my match, I got a call from Sachin. He also asked me to follow my instinct, it inspired me.”

Looking Ahead

The latest edition of the Indian Premier League begins on 5th April. Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith will be on the same side donning the colours of Rising Pune Supergiants. They begin their campaign on 6th April against Mumbai Indian. Steven Smith will captain the side after the RPS management decided to replace Mahendra Singh Dhoni with the Australian skipper.

Rahane said “Smith is the captain, so it is important to give him space. We are lucky to have Dhoni bhai on our side and he is an inspiration for not just the Indians, but also for overseas players. I am sure even Smith will take his advice from him.” He further added “Dhoni may not be the captain, but he as a player is an inspiration. A person like this teaches a lot even with his presence. He doesn’t speak much, but whenever he does, he leaves you inspired.”

Rahane is a great player and captained India very well. His captaincy decisions were important to India winning the series. He is a calm personality who lets his actions do the talking. The junior Karate Black Belt will be the one to watch out for in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.
