Jose Gimenez keen on a move to Manchester United

Jose Gimenez looking for a move to Manchester United this summer

Jose Gimenez has been scouted by Manchester United for a long time. British daily, Mirror, broke the news regarding Gimenez’s preferred destination next season. Jose Mourinho, the United manager, is looking to shore up his defence. Manchester United transfer committee shortlisted Gimenez along with Benfica’s Victor Lindelof. A transfer for Lindelof was believed to be a done deal before the beginning of January but ultimately did not materialise. Mourinho is expected to prize the young Uruguayan away from Atleti this summer.

Jose Gimenez: A case of wrong place at the wrong time

Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez are international teammates

When Diego Simeone took over at the Vicente Calderon, his job was to take a mid-table club and propel it to the top of La Liga. He began his job by working on the defensive part of the team. His team defended as a unit but the centre-halves undoubtedly played the most crucial role. Throughout Simeone’s reign, club captain Diego Godin has remained an irreplaceable part of the first eleven. Miranda, Stefan Savic and Jose Gimenez himself have been paired up with the Uruguayan captain over the years. This was supposed to Gimenez’s breakthrough season but he is instead seen more on the bench than on the field. Savic firmly placed himself as the second best centre-half at the club this season. Gimenez has since cut a frustrated figure at Atleti.

The reality of this transfer

Jose Gimenez is a very talented player because of which a host of clubs would line up for his signature should he decide to leave. Manchester United seemed to be the front runners even before the emergence of such reports. Now that the Mirror has reported about his intentions, a transfer would benefit all the parties involved.

Gimenez would be afforded more game time at United. The Red Devils will get a young, promising centre back who has the potential to become one of the world’s best. Atleti would arguably be the most benefited as they will get a huge chunk of money from this transfer. With their move to Wanda Metropolitan due next season, any form of money influx would be welcomed by the Atletico board. Diego Simeone, on the other hand, would not want to let his prized asset leave as he clearly sees him as the one for the future. Maybe even as a successor to Diego Godin.
