Diego: A Costa-Benefit-Analysis

Chelsea’s notorious frontman Diego Costa is a fascinating prospect in the world of Sportito.

In a fantasy game that lasts a season there’s little doubt that Diego would be in most people’s minds as a first choice pick. He’s good for a goal, having notched 17 this season but he’s bagged just one brace all year. Daily fantasy is dynamic and explosive; those that scoop the biggest prizes tend to pick players who have unbelievable weeks.

That’s not to say don’t pick Diego Costa. The bullish striker has a Sportito average point per game of 9.05, and has seven assists to compliment the 17 goals he’s put away this season. He averages 88 minutes so there’s very little chance of him being substituted early as Conte seems to have little to no faith in his other strikers.

Whilst Costa at his best can be unplayable, we’ve all watched him mope around a pitch with one intention – to wind opposition players up and cause trouble. Take this weekend and a rare blip in Chelsea’s march towards the title. Costa didn’t show up, got booked and scored -0.25 points.

It’s likely that a lot of Sportito players have gone for Costa; the lure of a seemingly unstoppable Chelsea with just one striking option clearly has its appeal. There’s more to life than Diego, though, and certain strikers, when picked right, could certainly decide a daily contest.

Take Romelu Lukaku, the Everton striker who has been on fine form this season. He’s scored four braces, with one hat-trick and even a four goal haul against Bournemouth. He may not be as consistent as Costa but he has a tendency to completely take over a game and that’s a Sportito player’s dream. Even Jermain Defoe has notched three braces this season which would have likely seen him eclipse the score of Costa in that game week.

Were it not for an injury that may see him miss the rest of the season, young England star Harry Kane would have arguably been one of the best pickups. He’s notched six braces and taken the match ball home twice.

With the league leaders facing Man City, Bournemouth and Man United in their next three games they’ll be hoping to bounce back from a shock defeat to a Sam Allardyce inspired Crystal Palace. To Costa or not to Costa? That is the question.
