Blog Kiosk: 2/20/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

I like this new motto.

This morning Dodger broadcaster Alanna Rizzo, via her twitter, shared the clubs motto for the upcoming season: "LA: Determined."

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1936 the Dodgers and Yankees complete their very first trade with each other. Brooklyn sent Buzz Boyle, Johnny McCarthy and $40,000 to the New York Yankees for Buddy Hassett. In 1984 Pedro Guerrero signed a five-year $7MM contract to stay a Dodger. In 2017 the Dodgers signed free agent outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to a one-year $2.6MM contract. He would only get into 35 games (primarily as a pinch hitter) before shutting down in June due to an recurrence of ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Happy Birthday, Charlie Babb & Jack Bolling!
  • Check out this new Dodgers podcast. It's called "The Real Housewives of Chavez Ravine," and it features two female Dodger fans in their sexual prime (not my quote). Go here to listen.
  • Per Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA; "Brock Stewart is in the right place at the right time."
  • He's a man on a mission. Via Tim Kelly at Sports Talk Philly; "If Dodgers had won 2017 World Series, Chase Utley may have retired."
  • Per Matt Borelli at Dodger Blue; "Tyler Colvin Signed To Minor League Contract."
  • Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com; "Buehler feels fine in first bullpen session."
Buehler is being "slow-played" this spring, manager Dave Roberts said, in part because of the muscle injury suffered in workouts, in part because management wants to avoid a spike in innings pitched from the 88 2/3 of last season. Buehler pitched only five innings in 2016 coming off Tommy John surgery.
  • Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com; "Tough Turner admired by Dodgers teammates: Third baseman refuses to use injuries as excuse, earns respect as team leader."
"I was fine," said Turner. "Nothing wrong with me. I was 100 percent. Yep. I was fine."
No, he wasn't. The rumor was that Turner hurt his back in the weight room between the clinching of the National League Championship Series and the start of the World Series. He missed a team workout, but two days later started and homered in the World Series opener. He took a ground ball off his leg in Game 4 and served as designated hitter in Game 5. Overall, he hit .160 with two RBIs in seven games against the Astros after hitting .387 with 12 RBIs in the first eight games of the postseason.
"He was banged up," manager Dave Roberts said. "He probably won't share with me or with you. But from the trainers, he was very banged up. But he'll never admit to it. He still won't. That's his character and that's what's so cool about him."

  • The 2018 Topps Now brand is just getting started. They have announced their first set of the season and every team in the league will have one. It's called "Road to Opening Day," and it features a 16-card team set (including one autographed mystery card). Go here to check it out and order.
