Unai Emery’s Arsenal to win the Premier League title? Whisper it!

Manchester City have already wrapped up the Premier League, right? Pep Guardiola’s men are unstoppable and it is only a matter of avoiding defeat in the remaining 24 games before they lift the top-flight trophy aloft, while at the same time emulating Arsenal’s “Invincibles” from 2004.

Surely, no one can challenge the City slickers and it is a given that they will walk off with the title? Well, Liverpool will, of course, deny this is a forgone conclusion being that they are only two points behind the Etihad outfit. Chelsea are in third seven points behind the leaders. And then we come to Arsenal under Unai Emery. There is no way the Gunners can make a challenge under a new coach who has only managed the club for 14 League games is there? You’ve probably seen a few of Arsenal’s matches by going on social media and searching live streaming, with “Arsenal Streams” being the keywords.

And if you have seen some games, or been lucky enough to have seen them live, you’ll know that there seems to be something brewing at the Emirates. Something positive. You’ll have to whisper it in certain circles, but there is a feeling that the Gunners CAN mount a title challenge. First things first, Emery’s charges must maintain their run of unbeaten games, and stretch it to 20 at Manchester United on Wednesday night if they are to be considered credible challengers.

When you read Emery’s comments on the title race, it’s easy to deduce from what he says that he is playing down any possibility. But, certainly to this correspondent, there is some ambiguity in his words. After the emphatic 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby on Sunday, Emery said this:

“At the moment, one thing is clear: some teams have an advantage over us. One is very clear, it’s Manchester City. The Difference between their points and our points.

“But also, for the goals and conceding goals, there’s a big difference to us. Another difference is between Liverpool and our moments which are not very big, but I think it’s an important difference also. With the performances, with the points, with the goals scored and conceded, we are the same as Chelsea and Tottenham — that’s the reality.

“We want to progress and not think about them but think about the next match. The Premier League is the first competition for us, but we also have very exciting prospects in the Europa League, Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. I want us to do well, to think about the possibility — maybe not this year, because it’s difficult — but in time, to approach one title here with the team. It’s about progress, improving and our demands.”

It remains clear, however, that whatever your interpretation of his remarks, that Emery is desperate to land a trophy this season, his first in charge of the club. And that is great news for Arsenal fans around the globe.
