8 Tips to Help Strengthen Your Intuition

I’m not sure how it was when you were growing up, but I can say for certain that from my childhood experience, the world wasn’t so fraught with fear. And contrary to popular belief, this is not because the world is more dangerous. Statistically speaking, crime is much lower than it once was. Perhaps it is because with the internet age, we have information and any kind of news at our fingertips. And of course, it is fear, shock value, and negativity that tends to sell.

We live in a fearful world propelled by an obsession to control. We fear uncertainty so we’re constantly on the lookout that something might go wrong along the way. As a result we do everything in our power to safeguard against inevitable disaster. This way of living is tiring, which can make you sick.

I have been an energy worker for most of my life – so without giving away my age, I will tell you that equates to decades. Illness and dis-ease tends to hit the body and take hold within it long after it has been hanging out as a blocked emotion, thought pattern, or systemic belief.

These can be cleared and healed, but you must be willing to build the courage to look at things you may find uncomfortable or have been denying – both within and around you. The most important thing to remember, is that you don’t need to live in fear. And I cannot emphasize enough the importance of strengthening Intuition.

Becoming intrinsically aware – sensing and feeling things before they become tangibly apparent, and taking action is very strong medicine indeed. The intuition is a trustworthy, more potent, relaxation-inducing comrade that will guide you perfectly to your true path.

Here are some tips on how to strengthen intuition.

Take Time to Contemplate

Spend time in silence for your intuition to begin to sink in. Take some time to devote to just being with you, and the empty spaces between your thoughts.  Voices from your intuition are always running in the background, quietly. They await moments behind and beneath the white noise and constant mental chatter most of us have going on. It is also helpful to keep a pen and paper with you to write down anything you need to clear your mind of.

Start Noticing All Your Five Conventional Senses

When you start to take note of all your five conventional senses, and really dive into being here, you raise your sensitivity to your sixth sense. The more details you begin to hear, see, taste, touch and smell in your daily life are fertile soil for activating your less tangible senses. You need to learn the language of your own intuition, and how you best receive it.

Focus on Your Dreams

Engage as much as possible in activities that won’t override the intuitive right brain and the subconscious mind, which is the wellspring of intuition. When you are sleeping, your cognitive mind is at rest so it leaves space for the subconscious mind to observe your dreams. Just as with intuition itself, everyone’s dreamscape is unique in how it expresses itself. Get to know the language of your dreams. One simple – yet potent – way to do this is to keep a dream journal next to your bed. Write about your dreams as soon as you wake up, or even in the middle of the night if you have dreams that wake you.

Get Involved in Creative Activities

Engage in creative activities such as scrapbooking, painting, drawing, or free-flow journalism. This rests the cognitive mind and allows your intuition to wake up. My go to is dance, and usually free form conscious dance. All of those expressive activities that you enjoyed as a child – bring them back into your life. I have a friend whose child is even teaching themselves to play instruments from Youtube videos. My own children are taking art classes on Youtube. It is calming for all of us when creative activities are engaged.

Test Your Hunches

We are all familiar with the concept of deja-vu. Do you sometimes feel that you experience sensations or visions of what might happen in the future? Perhaps you get a feeling that it will rain tomorrow even though the weather forecast predicts otherwise. Perhaps you tend to know who is calling as soon as the phone rings. Write them down when they happen, and also write down any times you can recall of your intuition working. Try to bring yourself into a frame of mind where these instances are not written off in your own mind. Trust that your intuition is at work, and that it is real and doing its job.

Consult With Your Inner Strong (Gut) Feelings

Your inner strong feelings prop up in reaction to certain events and are your intuition trying to speak to you through your body. The term ‘gut feeling’ was born for a reason – your body is also communicating non tangible information to you. You may get an uneasy feeling when you try to make a decision; pay close attention to it. Perhaps your head begins to ‘buzz’ or you feel disoriented around certain people or in certain places. Do your best to decipher when it is a thought pattern or belief causing unnecessary fear, and when it is your intuition trying to communicate with you. Learning the language of your personal energy flows and your reactions and responses to them will help so much with self empowerment.

Make a Change to Your Usual Daily Routine

Take yourself on a peaceful retreat, or perhaps spend a day in a new environment with nothing scheduled. Breaking up your usual routine breaks up energetic patterns and allows new energy flows to make themselves known. When you are occupied all the time, especially in the mind space, it is difficult to hear your quieter intuitive messages. I love meditation for the opportunity it gives me to observe my own mind and thought tendencies. As my favorite teacher, Gabrielle Roth (author of “Sweat Your Prayers” and “Maps to Ecstasy” once said, “Are you on a trip, or are you on a journey?”

Spend Time in Nature

Spend time out in the natural world, away from technology and other kinds of temptations that engage the cognitive mind. Nature has the wonderful tendency to draw you gently into a flowing mind space. Just today I was walking downtown, and a crow in the parking lot next to me made numerous sounds which sounded just like, “Hel-loooo”. It was such a pointed moment that it caused both myself and an elderly gentleman nearby to stop, take note, and comment to each other about it. It was a lovely experience, and a reminder that nature is – quite literally – always communicating with us.
