Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti commemorates the birth anniversary of the last and tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh. He was born to the ninth guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Mata Gujri on 22nd December 1666 in Patna, Bihar. Sikhs celebrate the birth anniversaries of all their Sikh Gurus which is known as Prakash Parv or Gurpurab. In Sikh Community, Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is a religious occasion and is one of the most important days in the Sikh calendar.

Guru Tegh Bahadur was on his way to East side of India on a missionary tour and arrived in Patna a few months prior to Guru Gobind Singh’s birth. He decided to move to areas of Bengal and Assam leaving his family in Patna. Before he left, Guru Tegh Bahadur proclaimed that if a son is born, he should be named Gobind Rai after the name of his grandfather, Guru Hargobind. Guru Hargobind had made a prophecy that the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur’s son will fight and end the tyranny of Mughals.

After the birth of Gobind Rai, a Muslim mystic performed his prayers in the East direction and proclaimed that ‘God has taken birth in the form a newborn in Patna’ and then he also went to Patna to pay his respect to Guru Gobind Singh.

His teachings have inspired all his devotees to live a spiritual life guided by courage, motivation and love for others. His institution Khalsa has carried on his legacy and protected many people from oppression and invasion. Guru Gobind Singh declared that after his death, the Sikh Holy Scripture ‘Guru Granth Sahib’ will be revered as the permanent Sikh guru and the guiding light for all the people in the Sikh community. He breathed his last in 1708.

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti 2017 – Celebrations  

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti 2017 will be observed on 25th December this year. It is the 350th birth anniversary of the Sikh Guru and will be celebrated with much vigor and enthusiasm in every part of the country, especially Patna and Punjab. ‘Takht Harmandir Sahib’ in Patna observes this religious festival on a large scale.

It is a pious occasion for the Sikhs so the celebrations on this festival are marked by religious processions and prayers. Devotional songs and distributions of sweets and sharbat to everyone on the street is the characteristic attribute of the processions held on these days. All devotees gather at Gurdwaras for special prayers and recite hymns and devotional songs.

Historical lectures are conducted and poems are recited eulogizing Guru Gobind Singh at various places. His entire life, his good deeds, the stories of his bravery and how he instilled courage and motivation among several others are narrated by his devotees everywhere. Some special dishes and sweets are prepared on this day which is then distributed to the poor and the needy.
