Great Breath of God and the Power of Creation in It

“The appearance and disappearance of the universe are pictured as an outbreathing and inbreathing of ‘the Great Breath,’ which is eternal, and which, being Motion, is one of the three aspects of the Absolute—Abstract Space and Duration being the other two. When the ‘Great Breath’ is projected, it is called the Divine breath, and is regarded as the breathing of the Unknowable Deity—the One Existence—which breathes out a thought, as it were, which becomes the Cosmos. So also is it when the Divine breath is inspired again the Universe disappears into the bosom of ‘the great mother.’ who then sleeps ‘wrapped in her invisible robes.’ By ‘that which is and yet is not’ is meant the Great breath itself, which we can only speak of as absolute existence, but cannot picture in our imagination.” ~H. P. Blavatsky

The Great Breath

The use of terms like “the Great Breath” and “the Breath of God” are common in scripture of many religions. But does God, who is pure spirit breathe?

The answer is no. At least not in the way that the term is used in our material world. As Blavatsky correctly notes, this “Great Breath” is more a mental activity than a Spiritual one.

Power of Creation

For something to come into existence, God merely has to think of it. While thinking on this level is probably quite different from our limited brain-mind thinking, there are similarities. While God creates on a universal and spiritual level with His thoughts, we are limited to Creation on the physical level with out physical brain and mind. And God has another great advantage over us: no competition.

When God decides to create something on the spiritual level, there isn’t some other being trying to cancel out those thoughts. Nor is there a Board of Creation that will have to argue endlessly about the merits of such creation before it can happen.

In our material world it is different. You may decide you want a world where everyone lives together in peace, but others like war and competition, so you don’t get that world of peace. I may want a world without money where the wealthy don’t hoard causing others to starve, but the wealthy, and those they have hypnotized, think otherwise. They love the world of competition and wealth concentration, so it goes on despite my best wishes.

A Lesser breath

We might want to ask how then the Demiurge created the worlds of matter when it was not the Great breath of God doing the creating. I can’t claim to know all the details, but this is how I see it.

First, the Demiurge is not a single being, but a collective name for Lucifer and the other fallen angels who rebelled with him. These angels are very powerful beings with creative powers only slightly less than that of God. When they worked together on one idea, they could make it happen.

Second, creation is not that difficult when there is no competition. God dis not specifically oppose the creation of the material plane of existence until after it happened. He had no restrictions, in a sense, on what the angels could create.

Third, this was not exactly the same type of creation as done by God. When God creates, he is making something (spiritual) from nothing. When the Demiurge created the physical worlds, it was by altering spirit. They slowed down spirit, split it apart creating duality. Therefore they didn’t truly create, they just altered the creation of God.

Great Breath of Creation

Some spiritual schools and gurus argue that the idea that God create anything new on the spiritual level is nonsense. They believe the Great Breath doesn’t exist. The argument they generally present is that if God is All, and God id perfect, why should he wish to create anything else? Obviously, they say, anything He creates must be less than Himself, so why do it?

The answer is as simple as the question. On the material level, we cannot know exactly what God is. We do know that creation is one of His great powers. That Great breath is real. God is a thinking being on a level far beyond our comprehension. And, As Blavatsky points out, a living being moves. Even if that movement is only in thinking, there is constant movement ion the Godhead. Thus if God’s though are moving as the Great Breath, they are creating. It doesn’t have to make sense to human logic. Instead, we have to reach a level of divine logic and knowledge (gnosis) to understand.
