Sorting Made Simple

Since washers and dryers have preset cycles, you can’t do much to make them work faster. But you can save a lot of time and effort on the front-end tasks—the gathering and sorting. This is where you can enlist the help of your family.

To avoid this expense, you may end up wearing the pants only occasionally in which case you’re not getting your money’s worth from them. Or you may take a chance on machine washing, which could ruin the pants and waste money in the process.

Heed the hidden meaning. The Federal Trade Commission requires that some type of “satisfactory label” appear in every garment sold in the United States. Satisfactory means that the method of care “should be tested and work for the entire garment—including buttons, fringe, shoulder pads, and linings.” In other words, a label may tell you to dry-clean a garment just because it has fancy buttons or fringe. This can run into a lot of money.

Handle with Care

Clothing can cost a bundle these days. The only way to fully justify the expense is to get as much wear from a garment as possible. Of course, if it fades or otherwise self-destructs after a few washings, that’s money down the drain. So you have all the more reason to exercise caution with the clothes you choose.

• Be careful with clothing that you buy in discount retail stores. Some of these stores sell less-than-high-quality garments that quickly fade or tear after a few washings. The clothes are made to look good in the store, but that’s about as long as many of them do. In the long run, you’ll spend more money on inexpensive garments that don’t last than on one well-made, higher-priced item.
• If you’re concerned that a garment is too delicate to be machine washed even though the label says it’s washable, take it to the dry cleaner instead. The exception: A garment labeled “Machine wash only” should never be dry-cleaned. The color is probably sensitive to solvents, in which case the garment would be ruined.
• While saving money is a good thing, you don’t want to cut corners when it comes to removing stains. If you try a few home remedies (after testing each one for colorfastness) to no avail, take the garment to the dry cleaner

Selecting the Best Fabrics

Some clothing labels read like road construction signs: They tell you what to do, but not why. For instance, why must wool be dry-cleaned? And why must spandex be line dried rather than machine dried?

The following tips evaluate the most popular natural and synthetic fabrics on the market. They’ll tell you which are most durable and easy to care for and which are too delicate to be practical.

Count on cotton. Cotton reigns as one of the most popular and readily available fibers in the world. Cotton garments absorb wetness from the body, making them much more comfortable than most synthetic garments. Plus, cotton cloth can be manufactured and dyed very inexpensively, which explains its popularity among textile manufacturers.

Cotton goods tend to pucker when drying and are prone to wrinkling. For less wrinkling, add fabric softener to the wash or buy garments with a permanent-press finish.

Line up for linen. Linen is a natural fiber in a class similar to cotton. It lasts longer and holds its shape better than cotton. It also costs more and wrinkles more, which means that linen garments require a lot of ironing. Look for linen blends as well as linen garments with a permanent-press finish. By comparison, these require little or no ironing.

Treat silk sensitively. Easy-care silk has become very popular in recent years. But usually, the cheaper the garment, the less durable and the more likely to fade. Silk is a delicate natural fiber that should always be dry-cleaned, regardless of what the label says. Hand washing or machine washing easy-care silk garments causes the fabric to fade or lose its shape.

Warily approach wool. Wool is one of the most resilient natural fibers, but it’s not without problems. It shrinks considerably when it gets wet. Never machine wash a wool garment. If you do, a Barbie doll couldn’t squeeze into it (okay, it wouldn’t shrink that much, but you get the idea). Always dry-clean.

Respect rayon. Rayon has established itself as a popular lightweight substitute for cotton. This synthetic fabric has a good drape, which makes it popular for dressier clothing. Unfortunately, it lacks durability. You should have all of your rayon garments dry-cleaned, regardless of what the labels say. Garments that are machine washed lose their shape, fade, and pill like crazy. (Pilling is when tiny fuzz balls form on the surface of a fabric after considerable use.)

Pick the ever-popular polyester. The new generation of polyester is gaining popularity, and for good reason. Aside from its high durability, polyester holds its shape well and resists fading and pilling. Polyester garments can feel uncomfortable during warm weather since they don’t absorb wetness like cotton does. In fact, textile manufacturers blend polyester with cotton for this reason.

Most polyesters and polyester blends are machine-washable, but read labels. Many expensive blends contain fibers that are dry-clean-only.

Choose faux wool. Many people who are allergic to wool purchase garments made from acrylic. This synthetic fiber duplicates many of the properties of wool, including its warmth and fuzziness.

Acrylic is machine-washable, but it can lose its shape and pill with repeated washings. You may be better off having acrylic garments dry-cleaned. Of course, if a particular garment is very inexpensive, it may not be worth the price of dry-cleaning.
