If we have to decide which comic-book movie is the best so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s no doubt we’d choose James Gunn’s magnum opus, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. There’s no surprise there as the sequel to 2014’s blockbuster hit garnered solid reviews from critics and a whooping $145 million in its first days of release in the US. This time it’s supremely witty and more meaty than the first. The scenes- bedazzling and epic!
While we enjoy James Gunn’s spectacular space opera, it wasn’t able to escape our critical observations. Yes, we love it, but we have a couple of lingering questions about some of the film’s plot points.
We can’t help but still think about these things after watching GOTG Vol. 2:
1. If Ego’s an immortal god, why the gray hair and wrinkles?
Peter Quill’s biological dad, Ego (Kurt Russel), claims he is a celestial god with a small “g”, which is true as he is the one and only Ego, the Living Planet. In fact, he could be anything he wanted to be. As a god, he was immortal. However, he had to make himself look old to conform to Peter’s idea of a father. But that’s just one theory. Another guess is that he’s actually aging because his core energy was getting weaker, and so he needed Peter to revitalise it. Whatever the reason for that, we can’t imagine anyone else playing Peter’s long lost patriarch than Kurt Russell. Or maybe we’re not just thinking hard enough.
2. Again, if Ego’s a god, why does he need to take a nap?
In the film, Ego always kept Mantis by his side to help him sleep. We couldn’t help but wonder why the heck did he have to take forty winks if he could do just about anything, even remaking the entire universe in his own image?
The answer might have something to do with the earlier theory that he needs to get the occasional nap to recharge his dwindling powers; hence, the need to have Mantis close by. Will we find out the real reason in Vol. 3? It’s unlikely now that Ego is destroyed. Nevertheless, Mantis might bring this topic up in the next movie. Whatever the reason was, let’s just hope it would mean something for the Guardians’ future.
3. What’s inside Ayesha’s golden cocoon?
In one of GOTG’s credit scenes, we saw a fuming Ayesha, having been tricked and defeated by the ragtag Guardians throughout the film, vowing her revenge and unveiling a weapon that she engineered herself, which she thought she should call Adam. The scene then cuts to show a gold-plated birthing pod, its heartbeat, silently screaming danger.
Comics fans know she’s obviously referring to Adam Warlock. In the comics, Adam Warlock is a genetically perfect, ultra powerful being who’s a great contender against Thanos over the Infinity Gauntlet. James Gunn made it no secret that he initially wanted Adam to be in Volume 2 but due to time constraints and having plenty of major characters already, he decided to cut him out.
We have yet to find out what Adam’s character will look like when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits the theatres in 2020.
4. Will we see more of Yondu?
Yondu’s redemption was the film’s finest point. His death was heart-wrenching, yet we felt so relieved that his character’s role in Peter’s life was given the acknowledgment it deserved.
Still, Yondu seems very dead. Michael Rooker, who plays Yondu in the film, has been teasing his involvement in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity Wars along with the Guardians of the Galaxy main casts. Obviously, we want more of Yondu in the Avengers film, but James Gunn has recently squashed that dream when he tweeted that Yondu in the set of Avengers was just a plot to trick fans into believing nothing bad had happened to him in Volume 2. Yo, guys! Marvel tricked us! Can you believe it?
5. Who created the Sovereign race?
The Sovereign is a highly advanced, genetically-engineered galactic race who live on the planet of the same name. In fact, they are genetically perfect and not a race to mess up with. Their high priestess Ayesha claims they don’t have a single bad trait or physical feature because they were perfected in a lab. So, it made us wonder: who were the beings that created the gold-skinned Sovereign race? Or were they just experimenting on themselves? The original Ayesha in the comics had a very complicated origin, but one thing we knew is that she was initially created by a group called the Enclave as a second attempt to create a super powerful being after Adam Warlock.
