The Best Book I Read in 2018 – Jim Camp on Negotiation

Happy New Year everyone!

I wanted to start off the year by sharing something that really helped me – a great Book I read towards the end of 2018.

It was written by the famous Jim Camp, a guy who has coached the FBI on how to negotiate with terrorists, hostage takers and all sorts of nasty bad guys. This guy has a reputation for being the best of the best and he’s the guy the experts turn to when there is trouble.

And, although it’s not on the subject of dating, I realized his book is a great resource for anyone interested in self improvement.

That’s because even though you’re probably not dealing with terrorists like Jim Camp, you are always negotiating with people in your everyday life.

Let me give some examples:

If you want to take someone out on a date, that’s a Negotiation.

Or maybe you want to plan Christmas dinner with your family – that’s a negotiation.

Or maybe you want to get along better with your roomate or your partner or your family – that’s a negotiation.

All these situations require negotiation skills, and depending on your skill they can all go very different ways.

If you know how to negotiate, you can get what you want, and everyone is happy. (Yay!). That’s the ideal outcome.

But, If you don’t know how to negotiate, you might get what you want but you piss people off. That creates bad blood and costs you in the long run.
Or, maybe you leave everybody happy, but you don’t get what you want. That leaves you feeling regretful or under-appreciated.

Or worst of all, you don’t get what you want, and you still piss everyone off by trying. That just kills your self esteem and makes you regret taking the initiative.

Well, it doesn’t have to be that way, not in business or in dating.

Reading this book, I realized that a lot of the strategies Jim was teaching  were ones that I was already using in my coaching sessions. But it was still interesting to see how the very same principles I taught guys in dating could be applied to business and other negotiation.

Anyways, I liked this book so much I wanted to share it with everyone on my list.

It’s called “Start with No” by Jim Camp.
