Houzz vs. Pinterest

Ah, the battle between Houzz and Pinterest rages on—hopefully it won’t turn into anything remotely similar to the Hunger Games (great story but scary concept). Chances are, you may be more familiar with Pinterest–although the two websites started at around the same time, Pinterest picked up more quickly and become popular first.

But Houzz has made its way into the spotlight—watch out Pinterest, there’s a new gladiator in the Coliseum, or, to keep up the Hunger Games theme, a new tribute in the arena!

Chances also are that you’re on Pinterest but not Houzz, and this is a mistake. I would say “may the odds be ever in your favor,” but I just don’t think they will be if you don’t take advantage of Houzz (and the numerous other social media platforms).

Differences Between Houzz and Pinterest

Houzz is similar to Pinterest, yes, but the two definitely have some differences:

  • One of the most obvious is that Pinterest covers a broader range of topics (not just house design but also food, exercise, fashion, and more) while Houzz is specifically geared toward home design/remodeling. It allows home professionals—architects, remodelers, etc.—to display their work.
  • On Houzz, users can connect with the design professionals rather than just look at pictures.
  • Houzz users can write a review of a company right on the company’s profile page. You can’t do this on Pinterest. I guess you can really just look at pictures and visit the company’s website.
  • You can use Houzz for content marketing opportunities—most homeowners use the ideabook feature to post pictures of their dream home/design ideas, but companies can use it as a tool for short content pieces, with photos, of course, and even links back to their website. Targeted keywords. Links to your website from a legitimate source. Need I say it? SEO value, hello! Here’s an example of what an ideabook could look like for a company on Houzz:

  • Houzz connects homeowners with home design companies on a local level. The professionals are broken down by metropolitan areas in nearly every state. Pinterest doesn’t filter local pins, so local companies aren’t as easy to find.

A cool infographic published by Select Kitchen and Bath on visual.ly does a good job breaking down specific differences between Houzz and Pinterest—so check it out.

Oh, one more thing…I’d also argue that users on Pinterest aren’t as interested in actually using a company’s services—since Houzz is so specialized, visitors who go to a company’s website from their Houzz profile are more qualified and are more likely to lead to conversions.

Take a look at two screenshots of one of my client’s visits from both Houzz and Pinterest (in a 12-month span):

While Pinterest drove more visits, none of those visits converted, whereas there were 12 total conversions from Houzz. And of the non-converting visits from Houzz, the bounce rate was much lower, and users stayed on the website longer (nearly 4 minutes vs. 30 seconds) and looked at more pages.

No, not every single client will get that many visits with conversions from Houzz. But even looking at a client who got 0 converting visits from Houzz and Pinterest showed metrics that are associated with a more qualified visitor—one who is more likely to come back and contact the company about their services:

See? The bounce rate is MUCH lower from the Houzz visitors, and they also stayed on the site a lot longer and visited more pages.

In short, Houzz is perfect for homeowners who want to browse and get design ideas but may not be ready to visit a showroom. Ok, it may seem like I was hating on Pinterest in this blog post. I wasn’t—but I will say that if you were to only pick one, I think Houzz makes more sense from an SEO (and lead-generating) perspective!

Don’t you want to see your website traffic look like this?

And guess what? Those are visits just from Pinterest and Houzz!

Wrapping Up
