Google for Jobs: What It Is & How It Can Benefit You

As a consumer, you can do a whole lot of things in Google, from looking up movies playing over the weekend to finding the best pizza joint near you to getting the answer to nearly any question you have (is Leo dreaming at the end of Inception? Is it bad to lie down after eating? A couple of my searches over the past week. I Googled the second one while lying in bed after an insanely large amount of food at the Cheesecake Factory).

Add one more thing to the Google list: finding jobs . For certain queries, Google now shows job postings in its search results.

How You Can Easily Connect with Job Seekers with Google Search

This initiative, called Google for Jobs, was first announced at Google I/O back in May—but now it’s rolling out. Consumers can do a Google Job Search and within seconds, numerous listings are available at the top of the search results (on both desktop and mobile).

With this new feature, Google is basically acting as a jobs search engine. It’s hoping to give users an improved experience for finding jobs and streamline the job seeking process by eliminating duplicate job listings on different sites.

Google has teamed up with a variety of help-wanted and employer-rating services (including LinkedIn, Monster, CareerBuilder, Glassdoor, Facebook, and more). At the I/O last month, CEO Sundar Pichai explained the motivation behind the feature: according to Google, nearly 50% of employers across the country were having trouble filling open positions, while job seekers weren’t even aware about a job opening.

How You Can Benefit from this Google Job Search Feature

I’m sure I don’t even have to tell you how many people use Google to remind you you’re missing out by not taking advantage of Google for Jobs. If you’re the owner of a company looking to hire new talent, this new feature is beneficial in several ways:

  • You can be prominently displayed in the search results: your postings are eligible to be displayed in the in the new job search feature on Google, featuring your logo, reviews, ratings, and job details.
  • You’ll be connected to more (and more motivated) applicants: job seekers can filter by various criteria like location or job title, which means you’re more likely to get applicants who are looking exactly for that job.
  • You have increased chances of discovery and conversion: job seekers will have a new way to interact with your postings and click through to your website.

Act Now & Get Listed

Only two things:

  1. Mark up your job listings with Job Posting structured data/use the right schema markup.
  2. Submit a sitemap (or an RSS or Atom feed) with a date for each listing.

If you already have job openings listed other sites like LinkedIn, CareerBuilder, Glassdoor, etc., they are also eligible to appear in the Google job search feature.
