Social Computing

Social interaction is an integral part of human behavior. Social interaction can be verbal as well as written. Earlier social interaction was face-to-face but with the technological advancement and popularity of internet, interaction has become virtual and technology driven. The tool used for this purpose is termed as Social Computing or Web 2.0.

Social computing is a great amalgamation of social interaction and digital media. It is a system that supports information gathering, processing and dissemination across organizational structure and social communities such as facebook, twitter, myspace, linkldn and other related community websites. Few common examples of social computing include the use of e-mails for maintaining social relationships and for sharing official information, instant messaging for day-to-day coordination with colleagues and friends or blogs, forums or message boards as a community building device. Due to the diversity of social networks and sources of information, social computing cannot come from a single source. So, integration of social computing with different sources is an extremely important and critical task. To facilitate smooth integration, the social computing should be open source, should have the ability to integrate the inside out and vice versa and should have rest-style architecture. If the social computing platform is designed using all these elements then the social networking tools would be easier to operate and less complicated.
