Healthcare Jobs for Veterans

Potential Healthcare Jobs for Veterans

At a medical & dental career training school, veterans can receive training in a number of different healthcare jobs, including but not limited to:

  • Medical Assistants help complete clinical or administrative tasks. This varies based on the practice and location. These can include assisting doctors with physical exams and minor surgeries, updating patient health records, taking vitals and measurements, and front office administrative duties.
  • Dental Assistants do numerous tasks in dental care offices. These ranging from patient care to sterilizing instruments and can include front office duties such as updating records and scheduling appointments. Can also include additional duties like taking and processing x-rays.
  • Medical & Dental Administrative Assistants help manage the front office of dental practices, ensuring insurance and billing information is accurate and organized as well as working with clients to schedule appointments and answering questions via phone.
  • Patient Care Technicians work in rehab centers, hospitals and other healthcare locations, working with doctors and nurses on basic medical procedures. They also help patients with daily living activities such as range of motion exercises, obtaining vitals, managing wounds, and assisting with feeding. They can also perform phlebotomy procedures and EKGs, amongst other tasks.
  • Medical Records and Health Information Technicians ensure that health records, patient schedules, insurance information and treatment histories are all properly organized and managed. They can also supply coding and billing support.
  • Phlebotomists are professionals who are certified to take and collect blood for medical labs. They are trained to use and maintain equipment for both taking and analyzing blood samples as well as properly labeling, storing and processing those samples.
  • EKG Technicians typically work in clinics or hospitals doing physical exams and screenings to measure the healths of patients’ hearts. They mostly do this through the use of electrocardiograms, stress tests and telemetry monitoring tests. They will also learn to record and provide information for patients.

The Healthcare Sector and VA Benefits

Veterans should make sure that the career training school they are attending is approved for VA benefits. In particular, the Post-9/11 GI Bill will provide educational benefits for those who served in active duty after September 10th, 2001. These benefits last for 36 months of educational enrollment.
