Iranian military personnel claimed to have successfully flew a Surveillance Drone over American Aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman based in Virginia currently operating the Gulf to support operations against the Islamic State Terrorist Group in Iraq and Syria.

The Persian Gulf has been the source of tensions recently between the US and Iran despite significant advances on the diplomatic front with the signing of a Nuclear deal with the U.S. and other global powers and President Rouhani’s recent tour of Western countries and signing multi-billion dollar trade deals with France and China.

Iran announced plans to conduct Naval drills in the area and reportedly warned a U.S. Warship to leave the area. The U.S. warship was said to have complied without incident.

This comes in the wake of the capture of 10 US sailors in the second week of January 2016 that strayed into Iranian territorial waters in Farsi Island which has been a revolutionary guard outpost since the 1980’s.

Also the Iranians claim to have successfully fired surface to surface missiles during its drills.

US Cmdr Kevin Stevens of US navy based in Bahrain commented that the US is confident and capable of Facing any threat in the region.

Reports and images Released of captured US soldiers triggered angry reactions from US politicians. The White House has described Iranian military exercises in the Strait of Hormuz as “Highly Provocative”.

Iran has denied the launching of missiles but the U.S. has released images of the missile launches.

The Straits of Hormuz is a passage way for a third of all oil traded by sea. Iran has a 20,000 kilometer shoreline facing the Straits of Hormuz and has been a source of tension between it and the U.S. that has even resulted in a naval skirmish in 1998.
