4 Phenomenal Things to do in Old Dubai

Tags: dubai

History and culture fanatics, look no further. Whilst you’ll no doubt want to travel to Dubai to visit the world’s tallest building and shop in the amazing malls, the city also has a side to it that’s far from glitz and glamour. Here you can find out what to do in Dubai’s historical district: Old Dubai.

1. Visit Dubai Museum

Built in 1787, Dubai Museum is the oldest existing building in Dubai. This museum provides the opportunity for you to learn the ancient history of Dubai and gain an insight into life within the rural and urban parts of the city.

Make your way around the different wings and take in the many antique monuments, exhibits and archaeological findings on display. This museum is a must-visit if you wish to uncover Dubai’s original heritage.

2. Bag a Bargain at the Souks

Bur Dubai and Deir are home to the famous souks which offer gold, perfumes, spices and textiles. Try your luck at haggling and you may pick up a memento whilst shopping in the bustling souks.

These Middle Eastern style bazaars are not just for tourists; locals actually buy everyday things at these traditional shopping markets. In order to experience a truly authentic journey to and from the two souk areas, which are separated by Dubai Creek, take an abra ride.

3. Take a Ride on an Abra

Not only is this the best way to travel between the two souk areas, it’s the best way to enjoy Dubai Creek’s stunning scenery, plus it’s cheap!

The Creek has played a huge role in the city's growth, initially attracting settlers to fish and pearl dive. Be sure to take the five minute ride across the water and admire views of the old city, as well as the impressive buildings that surround the Creek.

4. Go to the Bastakia Quarter

This is one of Dubai’s most picturesque heritage sites. It was built late in the 19th century, making it one of the older residential areas in the city. The Bastakia Quarter was originally settled by wealthy Persian merchants who visited Dubai, however today the Quarter houses art galleries, cafes and boutique hotels.

Soak up the atmosphere as you walk through this small area, which couldn’t be more different to the thriving city life, and feel the true soul of Dubai. The Bastakia Quarter offers tourists a peek into the past, providing both an educational and authentic experience.
