Ananuri Castle – A Medieval Treasure

Ananuri is a beautiful Castle complex that is around 72 km from Tblisi. Another 13th century relic, it was built by the Dukes of Aragvi and has seen numerous battles. The fortress was in use till the 19th century, however, today it is a peaceful and majestic remnant of history.

If you are driving from Tblisi to Gudauri or Kazbegi, there is no way you can miss Ananuri Castle, as it is right on the highway.

Inside Ananuri Castle

A few things that you will see inside the complex are: high crenelated curtain walls that joins the towers together, Church of The Assumption, and a view of the Aragvi River at the back. Outside the complex is a small cafe where you can buy authentic Georgian bread and Turkish coffee and a souvenir shop where I got my head cover.

The timings to visit Ananuri Castle were very short. You can only visit it during 2:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. Therefore its important that you plan wisely.

We were quite disappointed that we could not go inside while coming back from Gudauri, but we were rewarded with stopping there right on time on the way back to Tblisi, and finding a double rainbow right over the castle, making it look even more magical and picturesque.

We would definitely encourage everyone to go there and give it a shot, in-case you find it open! And if you don’t, you will certainly get some good pictures and memories to brag about!

If you have already been to Ananuri Castle, do let us know in the comments and let us know what its like from inside!
