La Vanille Nature Park specialises in the breeding of Nile Crocodiles.
- A small zoo and handbag factory 2 km south of the hill town of Riviere Des Anguilles on the road to Britannia.
- Nile crocodiles were imported here from Madagascar in 1984 and have been joined by giant land crabs and tortoises, lizard and other wildlife.
- It’s a pleasant spot to ramble through thick, steamy forest and enjoy the local fauna and flora.
- The park is open daily from 9:30 am to 5pm. Most Mauritian mammals and reptiles can be seen:
- skinks
- phelsuma
- tortoises
- turtles
- bats
- deers
- mongooses
- monkeys
- pigs and domestic livestock such as goats, fat-tailed sheep and donkeys.
- All is set in a rain forested valley studded with natural springs and streams.
- The springs contain freshwater prawns and fish.
- Guided tours are provided; a restaurant and a shop on the premises
“Rivière des Anguilles is 7 km from Souillac town of little interest, but the coast here is impressively rugged and there are a few interesting places dotted around.
- Souillac is named after the Vicomte de Souillac, the island’s French governor from 1779 to 1787.
Getting there and around
- There are buses roughly every half hour from Mahébourg to Souillac via the airport and Rivière des Anguilles.
- From Port Louis, buses run hourly, calling at Rivière des Anguilles en route.
- There are also frequent services to and from Souillac to Curepipe, with three buses a day taking the coast road via Pointe aux Roches.
- Buses heading along the coast to Baie du Cap depart hourly.
