The League of Legends OPL Split 2 Finals Will Take Place At The Melbourne Esports Open

League of Legends fans will be gearing up for the Melbourne Esports Open now!

The Melbourne Esports Open, a festival of Esports taking place this September 1 and 2, has secured its first big tournament! The League of Legends Opl Split 2 Finals will take place at the event — and thanks to a deal between Riot Games, TEG and ESL, the Finals will return to Melbourne until at least 2022.

Tickets for the event go on sale tomorrow at ticketek.com, with prices starting at $19.90 for juniors and $29.90 for adults. Family day passes start from $79.70. There are premium tickets available already, if you’re so inclined.

“The OPL had a stadium Grand Final at Sydney’s Luna Park in 2015 and Brisbane’s Courier Mail Plaza in 2016,” said Ringland. “However, 2017 lacked a stadium Grand Final which was disappointing to our fans and didn’t reflect the magnitude of the OPL Grand Final, which selects the team who will go on to participate in the largest esports event the world has ever seen – the League of Legends World Championship. The Melbourne Esports Open solves for that in a sustainable, annual event and I’m thrilled to be able to deliver our fans a stadium event in Melbourne for the next five years.”

An epic showdown of Australia’s best League of Legends teams in Rod Laver Arena will certainly deliver the hype, and fans came out in droves to previous Finals events, so this is an awesome move. Split 2 is already proving to be one of the most competitive seasons in the OPL’s history – for the first time it almost seems like any team can get up and win.

There are still other events yet to be announced, other competitions still to come. It still lines up perfectly with the Overwatch Contenders 2018 Season 2 Grand Finals, but it would be epic to see a reason for overseas talent to come on over as well. The Fortnite rumours have gained some credence with the announcement of the Fortnite World Cup at E3 last week. The press release for this announcement mentioned a true ‘open’ tournament format in the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne Park precinct – Fortnite’s World Cup format seems to be a perfect fit there.

Also part of the announcement is the news that retailer JB Hi-Fi has signed on as a presenting partner for the next three years as well. Surely more announcements are to come. Stay tuned to our esports hub to see them!
