Hitman Franchise May Live on at Square Enix Without IO Interactive

Share.

Not the end for Hitman just yet?

Despite Square Enix’s recent parting of ways with Hitman developer IO Interactive, it looks like stealth action franchise may continue on at the publisher.

When Square Enix first announced its decision to part with IO Interactive, the fate of the Hitman series was unclear. However, according to an English transcript from the company’s recent briefing with investors (via GameSpot), Square Enix is looking to continue to series.

Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda addressed the franchise’s potential future apart from IO, saying, “because the firm is engaged in the development of Hitman and other renowned titles, we are negotiating with prospective external investors capable of ensuring that these titles carry on.”

It’s worth noting that IO is also the studio behind the Kane & Lynch series, so it’s possible Matsuda’s mention of “other renowned titles” is in reference to that franchise, as well as any other projects the studio may have been developing for the publisher.

IO Interactive shared an update shortly after its split with Square Enix. The developer announced layoffs, which it said, “will allow us to be better equipped for our future endeavors.” Previously, IO announced plans to release three seasons of content for its episodic take on Hitman.
