Metal Gear Survive – Road to E3 2017

Share.

Controversy aside, Metal Gear Survive is the next installment in one of the most popular franchises in the world. Will Konami deliver at E3?

It’s that time of year again: E3 2017 is just on the horizon. From June 10-15, we’ll be covering the biggest games and hardware announcements of 2017 and beyond. While you can check out our continually-updated Games of E3 List, we’re now going to start diving deeper.

Every day leading up to the show, we’ll be highlight the stuff we want to see and play at E3 2017. Today’s game: Metal Gear Survive.

When Did We Last See Metal Gear Survive?

One game we’re hoping to see more of at E3 is Metal Gear Survive, a side-story to Metal Gear Solid V that follows four Diamond Dog soldiers who’ve been sucked out of the mainline Metal Gear universe via wormhole and stranded in a desolate alternate dimension filled with crystalized zombie-like creatures, where, as you might’ve guessed, they have to figure out how to survive.

The last we saw of Metal Gear Survive was a fifteen minute demonstration at Tokyo Game Show 2016 that showcased the game’s new direction — in spite of running in Metal Gear Solid 5’s engine and utilizing a lot of familiar mechanics, there’s an increased emphasis on cooperative stealth, tower defense, and, of course, survival.

Why We’re Excited For Metal Gear Survive

It’s still open-world, players don’t have the luxury of returning to Mother Base by helicopter when the going gets tough — instead, there’s a whole new system for building defenses against ravenous hordes of interdimensional creatures. In addition to that, wounds must now be tended to on the battlefield through a system reminiscent of the one from Metal Gear Solid 3. Resource gathering and management remains a key focus, but while MGS5 needed those resources for research and development and improving mother base, Survive seems to put more emphasis on real time crafting on the battlefield.

Will Metal Gear Survive Be at E3 2017?

It seems very likely Konami will be showing off more Metal Gear Survive at E3, but no matter how impressive their presentation is, it’s undoubtedly going to be met with some negative feedback — following Kojima’s tumultuous departure from the company and the incredibly high expectations set by previous Metal Gear games, Survive has a lot going against it — the newest installment isn’t trying to continue the Hideo Kojima’s incredibly complex tale of Big Boss and his various serpentine offspring, nor will it have any of Yoji Shinkawa’s iconic character and mecha designs, but we’re still very curious to see more of it, and hopefully we’ll get to do just that at this year’s E3. At the very least, we’re getting another game that lets players attach weather balloons to sheep, and we can always use more of those.
