WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT SPAM EMAIL

Whenever you receive a Spam Email message you can report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) by simply sending a copy of the message and Email Header to [email protected].

You may ask yourself where do I find this email header? I will show you where to find it on Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail.

On Hotmail open the message and then on the right hand side there will be an action pull down menu, pull it down and select view message source and it will pop up with the email header information.

On Gmail open the message and then on the right hand side there will be a arrow pointing down, click on it and select show original and it will pop up with the email header information.

On Yahoo you do not need to open the message, you can simply right click on it and then select view full header.

Whenever you complain about spam it is important to include the Full Email Header. The information in the header makes it possible for consumer protection agencies to follow up on your complaint. The FTC uses the unsolicited emails stored in this database to pursue law enforcement actions against people who send this spam.

If you have signed up for say a newsletter and choose to be removed from the mailing list and it is not honored, or you cannot due to a non working removal link you can let the FTC know by filling out their online complaint form at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov. Your complaint will be added to the FTC’S Consumer Sentinel database and made available to hundreds of law enforcement and consumer protection agencies.

You can also send a copy of the spam email to your internet service provider abuse desk. The email address is usually [email protected] or [email protected]. By doing this you can let them know about the spam problem on their system and help them to stop it in the future. Make sure to include a copy of the spam email with the full email header, in the top of the message state that you’re complaining about being spammed.

You can also complain to the sender’s internet service provider. Most internet service providers want to cut off spammers who abuse their system. Again make sure to include a copy of the message and header information, also state that you are complaining about spam.
Alot of people do not take the time to report spam but if more people did perhaps we would not get so much in our inboxes each day, so please report spam when you receive it, it only takes a few seconds.
