An Innovation Director diary written with the phone: Day 3

Everything is new and everywhere I see opportunities. I bring a pre-set plan that I will NOT fulfill. It is better to let a couple of weeks pass and begin to know the idiosyncrasy of the company. It is important to detect opinion leaders, potential allies, and people who could put me in the way. It is fundamental to know the people. Today I meet with the financial Director and the communication director. Both are crucial to starting an Innovation strategy.

The financial part will provide me with all data related to human resources, expenditure and resources to be used in R&D projects. Communication should be key. Everyone has to know that there will be a department that wants to do different projects. With communication I begin to work and we outline a plan to communicate internally. People right now when they talk about R&D see it as a huge brown, as an administrative work in which you have to generate a lot of documentation and innovation or the challenges are void. I have to reverse that, and in the coming weeks I will draw up the “Strategic Plan for R&D 17-20”. But I still have to talk to the different members of the steering committee. I do not want to make a document outside the philosophy of the company and I have decided again to break with my plans and dedicate myself in this month to know the company and, something that I did not plan to do until at least the 2nd quarter: to make myself known to The stakeholders. To make known to research groups, technology centers and other companies without a previous plan? YES. In this way, the plan will feed on all that information.

Therefore, I have begun to send mails to the Office for Transfer of Research Results (OTRI) of the universities, and I have resumed contact with all the agents of innovation that I already knew. The objective: to make them see that there is an ICT company that does want to do real R & D, that we will have a strategy agreed upon with the Management and that they will value me not for the money they get, but for the products or the new knowledge that I can generate.
