Come On Church, Suicide Is Not The Unpardonable Sin!

Reader, will Jesus welcome home a believer who died at his/her own hands? I believe he will, tenderly and lovingly. With that being said, there's some sad news out of Cincinnati, Ohio. My timeline is being flooded with the above picture along with the conversation that folks who commit Suicide are hell bound.

According to social media, 17-year-old Markeice Brown, who goes by Mari Safari on Facebook, has committed the unpardonable sin suicide just DAYS after his pregnant girlfriend takes her own life. Details surrounding the horrible incident are still developing, but we’ve learned that the family and friends of Mercedes, Brown’s girlfriend, blamed Brown for her suicide with allegations that he contributed to it. He was being harassed and told not to come to her funeral. Apparently, their actions pushed Brown to commit suicide. Along with his last heart-wrenching Facebook post, he posted a video right before the incident.

What I would like to address in this space is the notion that one who commits suicide is automatically headed to the lake of fire.  Nowhere in scripture is that taught. Yes, suicide is always a tragedy—but in itself, it is not the Unpardonable Sin. The only sin God cannot pardon is the sin of rejecting his son Jesus Christ.

The Bible does not seem to condemn suicide. There are, I think, six accounts of suicide in the Bible, the most notorious being those of King Saul (1 Samuel 31:2-5) and Judas (Matthew 27:3-5). Others are Abimelech (Judges 9:50-54), Samson (Judges 16:23-31), Ahithophel (2 Samuel 17:23), and Zimri (1 Kings 16:15-20). As far as I can tell, none of the six is explicitly condemned for taking his life.
