Look at this little girl putting all her attention on copying words from the book in her notebook. Ant, Ass, Ax, Apple ... They are undoubtedly some of the first words she manages to write in English. She is a tea workers’ daughter in the Giasnogor plantation. In the best of the scenarios, several years of small or large defeats and failures await her before she wins. I say this because at home there is no money, electricity, furniture, or an appropriate place to study. On the contrary, at home there is misery, little food, mosquitoes and many domestic chores to do. She is also a girl, and therefore very vulnerable: they could even marry her before she becomes a woman. Every year we see girls coming to our school like this one; with an academic level three or four years below their real age, with many difficulties to concentrate, with huge gaps in literacy and comprehension, with tremendous problems at home ... And despite everything, they try. They fail and they keep trying. They fail but keep trying. These children deserve infinite respect. And I truly believe that the result of many years of defeats and failures can be victory.

Mira esta niñita poniendo toda su atención en copiar palabras de la cartilla en su cuaderno. Ant, Ass, Ax, Apple… Son sin duda algunas de las primeras palabras que logra escribir en inglés. Es hija de trabajadores del té en la plantación de Giasnogor. Le esperan, en el mejor de los casos, varios años de pequeñas o grandes derrotas y Fracasos antes de vencer. Lo digo porque en su casa no hay dinero, ni luz eléctrica, ni muebles, ni un lugar apropiado para estudiar. Por el contrario en su casa hay miseria, poca comida, mosquitos y tareas domésticas que hacer. Además es una niña, y por lo tanto muy vulnerable: podrían incluso casarla antes de llegar a ser mujer. Cada año vemos venir a nuestro colegio niñas como ésta; con un nivel académico tres o cuatro años inferior a su edad real, con muchas dificultades para concentrarse, con enormes lagunas de alfabetización y comprensión, con tremendos problemas en casa… Y a pesar de todo, lo intentan. Fracasan y lo siguen intentando. Suspenden pero siguen intentándolo. A mí me merecen un respeto infinito estos niños y niñas. Y creo de veras que el resultado de muchos años de derrotas y fracasos puede ser la victoria.
