Words For Kingdom Living
Devotion for April 3, 2014
And Jesus said to them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, you cannot have any life in you unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood [unless you appropriate His life and the saving merit of His blood]. John 6:53 Amplified Bible
If one gives kids a big bowl of Popcorn their faces light up and they dig into it as if it’s of life’s greatest treasures. This luscious treat also enlivens my taste buds. Give me two bags of microwave popcorn with butter poured over it and it’s devoured in a matter of a few minutes. I guess my reaction to popcorn suggests that a kid still dwells someplace down deep inside.
But what spiritual lesson could one glean from the desire to engulf popcorn? It does relate to Jesus’ requirement for people to eat His flesh and to drink His blood. He was not talking about cannibalism. Rather he was alluding to peoples’ pleasure in eating fine food, such as popcorn, and their favorite beverage. It even included people’s favorite delicacy and their beverages that are regarded as being exquisite.
Jesus was saying that people would have to seek His person with enthusiasm and single-mindedness. And don’t forget the pleasure involved in the process.
Don’t be misled by any religious mindset. Such restrictive thinking has taken the enthusiasm and pleasure out of a relationship with Jesus Christ. He is to be our favorite spiritual food, to be devoured with gusto.
