Purpose [Personal Post]

Julia and I sang for 3 weddings/funerals in 3 weeks.
We did it together.

Hi Worship Leader. Here's a personal reflection of mine that's relevant for us as Worship Leaders. I haven't been leading praise and worship for the past month and a half... God has such a sense of humor though. The way my conscious is set up, its hard for me to say no to people when I'm asked to sing for a wedding or a funeral. Now, would you believe that every week for the past three weeks, I've been asked to sing for either a wedding or a funeral while on my supposed break from singing. That's already more weddings and funerals that I sang for, for the whole of last year, sheesh! Very funny, Jesus Christ lol.

As I've been singing for these consecutive hyper-emotion-filled, family-oriented events, I realized something very beautiful. I'm obviously not singing there to get a standing ovation from the audience. I'm also obviously not there to be acknowledged for the amount of hours I practiced or for the amount of lyrics I memorized or vocal exercises I used to prep or bottles of water I drank by doctor's orders because I'm singing etc., etc.

People at these gatherings are there to focus on love, family, and their futures.

So when a lyric comes from my mouth that causes a tear to fall from someone's eye or a smile to form from someone's lips, that has nothing to do with me. My singing, my gift, my calling is what God uses in that moment to trigger a memory, a thought, or a hope for the future that consoles, comforts, or inspires a person's heart. Nine times out of ten, I don't know any of those people. If I said something or did something that brings them love, peace, joy, solace, or consolation, I obviously didn't do it on purpose.

Its as if God has been showing me over the last three weeks, that people in church services are not much different from the ones sitting in funeral homes or wedding halls. Ultimately, our purpose as worship leaders is to make people reflective. Our job is not to trigger people to connect with our songs as much as it is to inspire people to connect with the hope that they need. People need hope. People need to feel loved. People need God and what He wants for them. People need comfort and consolation. People are tired and hurting and/or in need of encouragement.

As worship leaders, we don't know the things that are in their memories from their pasts or the hopes that are in their hearts for their futures. However, what we should know, is that our purpose is to motivate people to a state of reflection where the fruit that come from God (peace, love, endurance, etc.) can begin to bud and abide in their hearts. Our service is to God and for His will to be done on earth. God knows what His people need and He's only using our song and our message to communicate to others the impressions He wishes to lay on their hearts.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. -Galatians 5:13
