[Carl Jung: “…Sal deals Sulphur an Incurable wound.]

To Karl Kerenyi

Dear Colleague, 6 July 1944

Your recent communications on Asklepios interested me enormously.

Immediately after your visit I discovered a treatise which till now I had never deemed worthy of closer study.

In it I found that Sulphur is not only medicina but also medicus.

It reports a dream vision in which two figures, Sal and Sulphur, quarrel and suddenly Sal deals Sulphur an Incurable wound.

From this wound-evidently a borrowing from the gospel passage “flumina de ventre Christi” flows a stream of milk.

Diana comes from a grove to bathe in it.

A prince, passing by, burns with love for her, she reciprocates, but at this juncture she sinks below the surface and the prince, hastening to her rescue, is drowned likewise.

Whereupon their souls rise up out of the stream, etc.

The two are naturally Sol and Luna-the brother-sister pair who originally gave birth to Sulphur.

This vision reminds me of what you told me about Koronis.

May I ask you to name the passages in your texts?

With your permission I would like to refer to your findings.

It would help to fortify the minds of my readers if, in danger of getting lost in this abstruse chaos, they felt the solid ground of Greek mythology under their feet.

So it was with me, as I have already told you.

I had almost lost the courage to publish this farrago.

With best thanks in advance,

Yours sincerely,

C.G. Jung ~Carl Jung, Letters Vol. 1, Pages 142-143.
