Valuing cultural identity

Tags: stories school

This three-day NUT course is running in February and April 2007 for the fourth time. It is for staff in primary schools and for those teaching students in Years 7 and 8 in secondary schools. As in the previous three years it will be tutored by Robin Richardson. It will focus on practical and engaging ways of:

· teaching and learning about similarities and differences
· opposing racisms and stereotyping
· widening horizons
· stimulating curiosity
· helping all pupils to feel secure in their own cultural and personal stories and identity.
The course will run over three days (5/6 February and 25 April 2007) and fuller information is available from CPD Programme, Education and Equal Opportunities Department, NUT Headquarters, Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, London WC1H 9BD, telephone 020 7380 4719/4720/4725.

Teachers’ Stories

When the course first ran in 2004 several of the participants wrote brief accounts about the projects they subsequently undertook in their schools. You can view these by going to http://www.teachers.org.uk/topichome.php?id=152. You will see there the reference to Teachers’ Stories: summaries of practical approaches… You can then click on an index to the stories or else on the stories themselves. There are fourteen stories altogether.
