Here are a handful of standout players in an otherwise disappointing game.

Game Ball is back for the 2018 season after taking a week off to enjoy the first preseason game. But Game 2 is in the books and it’s time to award the player of the game for the Detroit Lions.

It wasn’t a pretty game for the Lions, and it was admittedly hard to try and find five candidates for this column but there were a few individual performances worth praising. Here are the Lions preseason Week 2 Game Ball candidates. Your votes will decide the winner.

Darius Slay

Slay was flagged for a pass interference call, and he also gave up a first down early in the game, but there was more good than bad. Slay tallied three passes defended in the first half alone, including one on fourth down.

Theo Riddick

There weren’t a ton of great plays from the Lions offense on Friday night, but Riddick undoubtedly had one of the better ones. RIP Alec Ogletree:

Tavon Wilson

On Thursday’s walkthrough, Wilson was out of the starting lineup, with Jamal Agnew in the slot and Quandre Diggs in the strong safety position. But on Friday, Wilson made a pretty good case for a starting spot.

Wilson continued to look solid as a run defender and also had a key third-down stop, making an impressive open-field tackle on Giants receiver Kalif Raymond. Five tackles and a pass defended in one half is pretty impressive, even if it is just the preseason.

LeGarrette Blount

It wasn’t nearly as successful of a day for the Lions’ running game, but in the third quarter LeGarrette Blount showed why he was a good addition to this Lions backfield. Despite offensive line struggles, Blount rushed for 29 yards on the Lions’ second drive of the third quarter. He was eventually stopped short on a fourth-and-2, but he had nowhere to go. His final statline doesn’t look all that good—11 rushes, 32 yards—but it’s hard to imagine Blount doing any better with the help he was getting from his offensive line.

Brandon Powell

A look at the box score reveals nothing special for Powell’s night, but in four return opportunities Powell looked like a solid special teams option. He consistently made the firt man miss, and his burst was on full display after that.

One of his longest play of the night, a 24-yard punt return, was called back due to a penalty, but it helps Powell’s stock nonetheless. He even added a few late receptions to bolster his night.
