Matt Patricia was one unhappy fellow after Friday night’s game.

For the most part this offseason, we’ve seen Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia in a good mood. He’s tried to pep up the media room several times, beginning his press conferences with an opening joke. Although he’s been intense at times during practices, he’s generally all smiles once the day is through.

It was a much different scene after the Lions’ preseason loss to the New York Giants. Patricia was visibly frustrated with the team’s performance Friday night, and didn’t mince any words in his post-game presser.

“I’m going to be not overly pleased with anything at the current moment,” Patricia said about the team’s performance.

For the first time this preseason, Matthew Stafford led the Lions’ first team offense and the results were far below expectations. Stafford completed just two of five passes in his debut for 51 yards. Though he drove the Lions to a field goal on one drive, the other two ended in three-and-outs, thanks largely to some shaky pass protection that led to two sacks on the Lions’ franchise quarterback.

But Patricia was quick not to just throw the Lions’ offensive line under the bus... everyone was culpable.

“I think our execution has to be better overall, and in some of those situations there are different facets to those plays, so it might be a little different of a circumstance than just maybe looking at the protection,” Patricia said.

But while Patricia was obviously disappointed in his team’s performance, he wouldn’t let himself off the hook, either.

“I think we have to, again, go back and really try to improve and get better. Obviously [we] didn’t perform very well and that’s going to start with coaching, and I have to do a better job.”

So was there anyone that performed well enough to catch Patricia’s eye on Friday night? If there was, Patricia was in no mood to talk about him.

“I don’t think we played particularly well at all at any position,” Patricia said bluntly after the the game.

And it showed on the field. The Lions were outgained by more than a yard per play. And while the Lions finished with more yards than the Giants, nearly half of their yards (148 of 308) came in the game’s final two drives.

With now two disappointing games under Patricia’s belt, he’ll have to work out the kinks quickly. No damage has been done, as two preseason losses are meaningless, but Patricia is running out of time. The regular season begins in just over three weeks.
