Friday open thread: Who will win the NBA, NHL finals?

After a crazy week, let’s turn our attention to the other major sporting events on the horizon.

I know, I know. This is a Detroit Lions blog, what are we doing discussing the NBA and the NHL?

Well, after a crazy week that featured the Lions finally starting OTAs, Calvin Johnson throwing the team under the bus then showing up to Raiders camp sporting the shielded Oakland logo, and a major site redesign, I think it’s time to catch our collective breaths. The Detroit Lions are off for the rest of the week, so let’s turn our focus, briefly, to the rest of the sports world.

On Thursday, both the NBA and NHL wrapped up the conference final round of the playoffs. The Cleveland Cavaliers easily danced past an injured Boston Celtics team, setting up a rematch between the Cavs and the Golden State Warriors. On the rink, the Pittsburgh Penguins won a thrilling Game 7 over the Ottawa Senators in double overtime to advance to the finals against the Nashville Predators, who are enjoying their first ever conference championship.

So today’s Question of the Day is:

Who do you think will win the NBA and NHL championships?

My answers:

Warriors in 7. I’m not a huge basketball guy, but when Golden State went out and got Kevin Durant last offseason, you knew they were destined to make their third consecutive NBA Finals. What I didn’t see coming was their 12-0 playoff record on the way there. They’ll have to take down LeBron James and the Cavs team that infamously came back from a 3-1 deficit in last year’s finals to defeat the Warriors in seven games. I don’t think Golden State will let that happen again.

Penguins in 5. While I’d love to see Nashville come in and shock the more experienced, and—let’s face it--more talented Penguins team, I just don’t see that happening. Predators goalie Pekka Rinne gives Nashville a shot to hang with Pittsburgh for a while, but he won’t be able to carry them long enough. That’s sad to say, especially when I recently learned that Golden Tate is a big Predators fan:

Your turn.
