NFL Draft rumors: Sporting News sources expect Lions to select Taco Charlton

Take it with a grain of salt, but one source believes the Lions will take Taco Charlton, if available.

We’re hours away from the 2017 NFL Draft and, per usual, rumors are running rampant. As always, you should take such rumors with a grain of salt. For example, the highly reliable Dave Birkett heard last year that the Detroit Lions would be taking Vernon Butler if he was available at 16 overall. Butler fell to the Lions, but Bob Quinn selected Taylor Decker instead.

Keep that in mind when it comes to this rumor, via Eric Galko of Sporting News (emphasis added):

Michigan’s Taco Charlton likely will be a top-25 pick. The Lions and Dolphins are his most likely destinations. The Lions are where I slotted him in my final mock draft. (UPDATE: Multiple sources expect Charlton to be the Lions' pick if he's available.)

This pick would make a lot of sense for the Lions. Charlton fits the Lions’ big need for a closed end opposite Ezekiel Ansah. The former Wolverine can bring the pass rush (9.5 sacks in 2016) and has the perfect build for a left end in Teryl Austin’s defense.

While Charlton remains the most popular pick for the Lions among mock drafts, he seems to have lost a bit of hype over the past month. Once considered to be an option in the top of the first round, most mocks have Charlton drafted in the late first round or even dropping into the second. Many question why Charlton only saw success at the very end of his collegiate career.

Still, with the Lions he makes a lot of sense. Detroit currently doesn’t have a great pass rushing option outside of Ansah, and Charlton would be expected to start right away.
