Report: Lions expected to re-sign Armonty Bryant to one-year deal

The Lions have reportedly re-signed a key rotational piece at defensive end.

The Detroit Lions haven’t attended to their own unrestricted free agents much this year. In fact, Detroit has only re-signed one of their own unrestricted free agents: long snapper Don Muhlbach. However, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the Lions have re-signed a second: defensive end Armonty Bryant.

The move has yet to announced by the team, nor has it been confirmed by any of the Lions beat writers.

UPDATE: Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press is reporting the two sides are closing in on a deal, but it has not yet been finalized.

If true, Bryant comes back to Detroit after a tumultuous year. After joining the Lions mid-season, Bryant had a good string of games, tallying 3.0 sacks in five contests. However shortly after, Bryant had to serve a three-game suspension for a substance abuse violation from his time in Cleveland. Upon his return, Bryant only played one game before a knee injury landed him on injured reserve.

Bryant brings some moderate success to the Lions’ weak defensive line. He should play a fairly large role in Detroit’s rotation at defensive end, and could even contest for the starting job opposite Ezekiel Ansah. The Lions have previously added Cornelius Washington in free agency, who will join the competition with 2016 standout Kerry Hyder.
