The Breadwinner

Thu 22nd Feb 2018 8:00pm Cineworld

Irish filmmaker and animator Nora Twomey makes her solo directorial debut in this acclaimed feature that takes  us to the streets of Afghanistan via Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon. Our heroine is Parvana, an 11-year-old girl whose family, like many others, struggle for a better life under Taliban rule in 2001. Based on Deborah Ellis’s much-loved novel, Parvana cuts her hair and dresses like a boy in an attempt to help her family survive following the wrongful arrest of her father. Twomey’s powerful film drew the attention of UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie, who is executive producer.

For the Cork-born animator, who founded Cartoon Saloon with Tomm Moore and Paul Young, The Breadwinner is a passion project several years in the making. The studio has created such award-winning films as The Secret of Kells, but this is Twomey’s first solo run, and its powerful storytelling and striking animation have garnered a great deal of international attention throughout awards season.

Red Sparrow

Wed 28th Feb 2018 8:30pm Cineworld

“Black Swan meets Nikita – an impossibly cool Jennifer Lawrence leads an all star casr in this slick and seductive thriller” – Gráinne Humphreys, Festival Director

Adapted from Jason Matthews’ acclaimed novel, Red Sparrow tells the story of a Russian ballerina whose career is cut short in tragic circumstances. With nowhere else to turn, she’s recruited to a covert Russian intelligence-training school, where she’s forced to use her body as a weapon. As she rises through the ranks, she is called upon to make some potentially deadly decisions.

The film sees Jennifer Lawrence reteam with filmmaker Francis Lawrence, who directed her in the last three Hunger Games movies.

Surprise Film

Sun 4th Mar 2018 5:00pm Odeon Point Village, Screens 1, 2 and 3

One of the most eagerly anticipated presentations in the festival, the Just Eat Surprise Film is shown amid great speculation and no one – not even the projectionist – knows the film’s title until the first few frames on screen slowly reveal its true identity. An annual treat for the brave and the bold, the Surprise Film is a tightly guarded secret, but one thing that can be guaranteed is that no one need go hungry, as this year the screening is supported by Just Eat, the official food ordering app of ADIFF, who will be offering treats to everyone in the audience.
