Five beautiful cafes in Singapore to escape from reality

Life can be stressful at times and we need to have a change of environment to recharge, even for a couple of hours. Dining is one of the pleasures in life. It is a social activity which can serve as a method of de-stressing as well. Here are five beautiful cafes in Singapore which we like to go to escape from our normal routine. Whether because of its decor, its location or just its ambience,  these are restaurants which make us feel that we have stepped into a different space. The food at these beautiful cafes in Singapore are also pretty decent.  You can read more about our visits to each cafe by clicking on the links provided.

Hans im Glück

Escape to a German forest

Escape to a forest when you are in the heart of Orchard Road?  The German Burgergrill is named after the fairy tale “Hans in Luck” (or Hans im Glück in German) by the Grimm Brothers. Walk into Hans im Glück Singapore and you walk into a restaurant resembling a German forest with birch logs installed in the beautifully decorated space. Its thick menu, which looks like a fairy tale book, offers burgers for vegetarians, vegans and die-hard meat eaters.  Read more.

Escape to a Convent

Oscar Hammerstein II asked in The Sound of Music, “How do you solve a problem like Maria?”  Well it seems that joining a convent made a huge difference to the life of Maria Von Trapp.   We are not joining a real convent, but there is a former convent that we like to escape to once in a while.  The tranquility of the gardens of CHIJMES is a big contrast to the noisy city outside.  A new cafe, Glasshouse CHIJMES has sprouted out of nowhere in the grounds of the former CHIJ.  Glasshouse Specialty Coffee and Toast Bar is a petite cafe offering coffee and light food out of a glass box. Escape to Paris

Visiting the Cafe and Bar Gavroche is like stepping into a Parisian cafe. From the marble-topped tables, cafe chairs, the paraphernalia on the well-stocked bar, wall mirrors,  the attention to detail did not go unnoticed. In fact one of the dining rooms is decorated to look like an antique French kitchen. One section of the cafe was even paved with ‘cobblestones’ presumably to simulate the effect of dining at a roadside cafe in Paris.  Read more.

Escape to the past

Jubilee Coffee House brought to mind the old Jubilee Theatre and the Skillets Coffee House in Supreme House. The bungalow looked like something out of an old Cantonese movie. The bicycle, scooter and vintage car parked under the porch helped to complete the task of transporting us back in time to another era.  Read more.

Escape to a real forest

Our last beautiful cafe in Singapore to escape to is Spize (Rifle Range).  This out-of-the-way cafe is situated in the Temasek Club in the middle of the Bukit Timah nature reserve. The Temasek Club is an exclusive club for SAF Officers, but two f &b outlets are open to the public.  The Spize Rifle Range restaurant is a beautiful place. Like the Chinese restaurant, Dragon Phoenix Grand (read our review here), it has the view of the surrounding Bukit Timah nature reserve and the swimming pool. This is probably one of the best views of our natural forest from a public restaurant.  Read more.
