RaspberryPi: 3.Standalone RetroPie Build

RetroPie Initial Installaion
The following instructions are based on the GitHub RetroPie First Installation Setup Guide (https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation), also WinRAR installation instructions are provided as this archive utility contains useful utilities for converting a batch of compressed files (i.e. 7z to zip).

Required Software:
RetroPie Image (https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/releases/download/4.1/retropie-4.1-rpi1_zero.img.gz)
Win32 Disk Imager (https://kent.dl.sourceforge.net/project/win32diskimager/Archive/Win32DiskImager-0.9.5-install.exe)
WinRAR 64Bit (http://www.rarlab.com/rar/winrar-x64-540.exe)


On Windows Device:
  • Download RetroPie Image using the URL provided, this is specifically for RaspberryPi Model's zero and one. The GitHub RetroPi First Installation Setup guide has provide a simple method to ensure the correct version is downloaded (count the Raspberries on boot up).
  • Download WinRAR using the URL Provided, this is specifically for 64Bit Windows.
  • Run 'winrar-x64-540.exe' to start the WinRAR installation, if prompted allow application to make changes.
  • Click 'Install' to set Installation Directory (i.e. C:\Program Files\WinRAR).
  • Click 'OK' to accept WinRAR Configuration Settings.
  • Click 'Done' to acknowledge installation successful.
  • Decompress RetroPie Image file (retropie-4.1-rpi1_zero.img.gz) to a temporary location (i.e. C:\Windows\Temp) using WinRAR.
  • Download Win32 Disk Imager using the URL Provided.
  • Run 'Win32DiskImager-0.9.5-install.exe' to start the Win32 Disk Imager installation, if prompted allow application to make changes.
  • Click 'Next' to acknowledge the welcome message.
  • Select 'I accept the agreement' and click 'Next' to continue.
  • Click 'Next' to set Installation Directory (i.e. C:\Program Files (x86)\ImageWriter\).
  • Click 'Next' to acknowledge start menu folder.
  • Click 'Next' to acknowledge additional tasks.
  • Click 'Install' to start installation.
  • Uncheck 'View README.txt' and 'Launch Win32DiskImag er'.
  • Click 'Finish' to acknowledge installation successful.
  • Insert SD Card into the USB MultiCard Reader.
  • Insert USB MultiCard Reader into Windows device.
  • Start Win32 Disk Image (START > Programs > Image Writer > Win32DiskImager),
    if prompted allow application to make changes.
  • Click folder icon, next to 'Image File' to select a disk image.
  • Select RetroPie image file previously decompressed (retropie-4.1-rpi1_zero.img) from temporary location.
  • Check 'Device' is correctly set to the SD Card drive (i.e. F:\).
 
  • Click 'Write' to start transfer of the RetroPie Image file to the SD Card. 
  • Click 'Yes' to acknowledge SD Card corruption warning.


  • Click 'OK' to acknowledge image was successfully written to the SD Card.
  • Click 'Exit' to close Win32 Disk Imager.
  • Safely remove the USB MultiCard Reader from the Windows Device.
On RaspberryPi:
  • Remove SD Card from the MultiCard Reader and insert into the Raspberry Pi.
