Create pockets of silence in your day-to-day schedule-slow down the pace of your life

When we speak, the tone and level of our voice is a direct outcome of our frame of mind. If it is calm, then our voice will be controlled and reassuring. Calmness of the mind comes from Silence.

It is the silence, which promotes thought. If we take a few minutes to pause and be silent, our thoughts are more easily controlled.  According to Herman Melville, “All profound things and emotions of things are preceded and attended by silence”.

There are innumerable numbers of research that reiterate the power of silence. It rejuvenates the nervous system, sustains energy, and creates a mindfulness that makes our mind adaptive and responsive.

Silence fathers ideas. The thoughts by which great things emerge fully formed. In fact, majestic deeds in the physical world have and will originate from quiet contemplation.

Sadly, we have lost the ability to be silent. Plugged into various devices, our minds are enslaved and salivate, like Pavlov’s dog at the sight of images and sound. So much so, we are afraid to be alone with our thoughts. That’s why, we keep ourselves stimulated without a pause and shift our attention from one shiny stimulus to another.

Yet, there are moments, when we yearn for silence. Occasions, when we would like to get away from all the noise and light.  However, we dare not as there are a hundred things clamoring for immediate gratification.

Even if we are surrounded by noise, it is up to us to build quiet moments into our lives. For in silence, we have an opportunity to step back and assess our motivation. Big or small, the pause afforded by silence will restore, heal and show the way inward to our soul.

Silence rejuvenates. It reaches into the deepest recesses and clears away the cobwebs of urban living. So, diligently, create little pockets of silence in your schedule. If not for 10 minutes, then be silent for at least 5 minutes. Let the pace of your life slow down by unplugging from all distractions and cocooning yourself in silence. The results might surprise you.
