One BSF jawan killed, three injured in Pakistan’s ceasefire violation

Merely a day after the Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Gurnam Singh was laid to rest, another one of BSF soldier has been killed, three other seriously injured on Monday, in a ceasefire violation by Pakistan.

Sushil Kumar, the head constable of Border Security Force (BSF) was killed and three others attained serious injuries in a heavy mortar shelling by the Pakistani Rangers in the wee hours of Monday. The heavy shelling occurred in the along the International Border from Suchetgarh sector in R S Pura to Pargwal in Akhnoor sector.

Elaborating on the death of Sushil Kumar, the BSF Jammu frontier DIG Dharmender Pareekh stated, “Head constable Sushil Kumar was hit by a splinter in his chest while retaliating the Pakistan fire. He was administered first aid and evacuated to Government Medical College and hospital in Jammu. He succembed to his injuries at 12.30am on Monday.”

According to the Army sources, Sushil Kumar was from Haryana’s Pahova in Kurukshetra district. The three others wounded included an Assistant Sub-Inspector R D Puri and two other local women from Akknoor – Parkasho Devi of Gajanso and Krishna Devi of Treva.

The army reports suggest that Pakistan had started violating the ceasefire since the evening of Sunday along the international borders. The Pakistani rangers were reportedly targeting using the Indian posts along the borders using small fire arms. The BSF officials stated that they had not initially retaliated. But after the midnight the BSF began to hit back at the Pakistani rangers with intensity.

The heavy mortar shelling has badly damaged over twenty four Indian army posts.

The army sources state that the firing from both the sides stopped after intense firing of two to three hours. Witnesses say that the shelling and the firing were so powerful that it could be heard from the places situated over 20 kms from the borders.

The shelling and the firing has reportedly caused considerable damage to the properties and cattles of the civilians living near the borders. The civilians have mostly remained inside their homes till there was lull in the shelling and firing, and for sometimes even after it went silent.

This incident of ceasefire violation by Pakistani rangers have come within hours after Arun Kumar, the Additional Director General, BSF, had given a public warning to Pakistan that they will be paying ‘heavy price if they touch Indian soldiers’. He had declared that BSF is fully prepared for any eventuality that Pakistan might throw on Indi’s way. Interestingly he had confessed that BSF was aware that the ‘peace along the border’ can “any turn anytime”, and BSF was fully prepared for that.

The Additional Director General was speaking to the public and media who had gathered to lay BSF sepoy Gurnam Singh rest after he was killed by the Pakistani rangers. Singh had attained fetal injury to his head when a sniper hit him sideways. Although he was rushed to Government Medical College in Jammu, he succumbed to his injuries after battling death for two days. Gurnam Singh had however, before he had martyred, had successfully foiled an infiltration attempt at International Borders.
