ISRO Sucessfully Launches GSLV-F05

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has successfully placed the advanced weather satellite, INSAT-3DR in its orbit using GSLV-F05 rocket on Thursday.

The rocket GSLV-F05 was launched at 4:50 pm on Thursday carrying India’s INSAT-3DR the advanced weather satellite. The rocket which was supposed to take off at 4:10pm was delayed 40 minutes due to technical faults. The rocket has however been successful in putting satellite in its geo-transfer orbit.  Once in orbit, the satellite’s own propulsion had carried it to its geosynchronous orbit. 2,211 kg INSAT-3DR will have the operational lifespan of eight years. The satellite is expected to assist the scientist in studying weather patterns, besides helping in surface level search and rescue missions. For this purpose it has been equipped with latest technologies.

The Thursday’s launch has been a milestone of huge success for ISRO as it is the first flight of the rocket with indigenous cryogenic technology. ISRO has been aspiring to have GSLV which could launch the rockets weighting more than 2000 kg. but it has been suffering major setbacks due to the avialbilty of limited resources and technology. One of the major hold up it suffered was when Russians at the command of US had withheld the cryogenic technology which was crucial for the construction of GSLV. So, ISRO had begun experiments since 1990s to built the cryogenic technology in India itself to become self sufficient.

Speaking to media after the launch, one of the top official of ISRO said, “Today’s launch of GSLV-F05 is significant since it is first operational flight of GSLV carrying Cryogenic Upper Stage. Earlier launches were developmental. The engine used was Russian engine. Today’s launch is indigenous Cryogenic Upper Stage and it is the first operational flight.”

Congratulating his fellow scientists an overjoyed ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar said, “Hearty congratulations to the entire ISRO team for the wonderful job you have done. Keep it up… t was the seventh successful mission this year including the IRNSS series and the scramjet propulsion mission and it had been conducted with “utmost professionalism in the short period possible”

The director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) lauded the GSLV as the “our beloved Make in India” technology. He said, “The mission lifted the highest mass satellite…GSLV MKIII is going to lift the highest mass satellite on Indian soil in another three months.”

Shedding the light on the technology of  INSAT-3DR, one of the ISRO officials said that the sounder pad technology would provide the essential weather information like temperature, humidity etc, while the Data-Relay Transponder would analyse and convey the meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic data. The meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic data would assist in the rescue operations by picking up the alert signals activated by the distress bacon of maritime, aviation etc
