Spain: Senior Spanish police officer accused of accepting €800,000 bribe

One of Spain’s most Senior police officers has been arrested on suspicion of accepting cash and gifts, including €25,000 towards the cost of his son’s wedding, from people seeking to avoid customs controls.

Carlos Salamanca allegedly used his position at Madrid airport to allow contacts to move freely without visas or having cargoes checked by authorities. He has been indicted on charges of bribery, wich he denies. He was released on bail by a judge pending trial.

The bribes were said to have been paid by a businessman working for a state petrol company from Equatorial Guinea, a former Spanish colony in west Africa.
