TfL revokes Uber’s license to operate in London

Uber will no longer be permitted to Operate in London after its current license expires at the end of September, Transport for London has said.

In a statement, TfL said that the San Francisco-based private car hire firm’s conduct demonstrated a lack of corporate responsibility which could have potential public safety and security implications and is therefore “not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence”.

In its decision, TfL drew particular attention to Uber’s approach to reporting serious criminal offences, obtainment of medical certificates, and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. The transport body also questioned Uber’s use of Greyball software, which “could be used to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to the app and prevent officials from undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties”.

Under the Private Hire Vehicles (London) Act 1998, Uber has 21 days to appeal the decision, during which time it can continue to operate in London.

Upon hearing the decision, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said:

“I fully support TfL’s decision – it would be wrong if TfL continued to license Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners’ safety and security.”

Maria Ludkin, Legal Director of drivers’ union GMB, said:

“This historic decision is a victory for GMB’s campaign to ensure drivers are given the rights they are entitled to – and that the public, drivers and passengers are kept safe.

“As a result of sustained pressure from drivers and the public, Uber has suffered yet another defeat – losing its license to operate in London.

“It’s about time the company faced up to the huge consequences of GMB’s landmark employment tribunal victory – and changed its ways.”
