Brits report rise in intolerance since Brexit vote

Half of Britons believe the country has become a less tolerant place since the Vote to leave the European Union on 23 June.

As Prime Minister Theresa May prepares to trigger Article 50 on Wednesday and begin the formal Brexit process, a new study from Opinium Research has revealed that UK adults have noticed a Rise in intolerance over the last nine months.

Researchers found that 52% of ethnic minorities and 49% of white British people have noticed a shift towards intolerance since the historic vote on 23 June.

Similarly troubling was the finding that 64% of people from an ethnic minority reported they have been the victim of discrimination because of their race, a rise of 6% from last year’s study.

James Endersby, Managing Director of Opinium comments:

“As we begin to see the reality of Brexit take shape, it is vital that we not only consider how this impacts our relationship with Europe but also the attitudes of our own citizens. Our research shows that people have noticed the impact the vote has had on our attitude to multiculturalism and integration – hopefully this report’s findings will provide both the public and policy makers with insights that can contribute to a more unified and integrated society.”
