Nestle Voluntary Recall: What You Need to Know

On Thursday, March 10, Nestle USA issued a voluntary Recall of DiGiorno, Lean Cuisine, and Stouffer’s products due to the potential presence of pieces of glass. The company believes that the pieces of glass are in the spinach, a common ingredient in these frozen foods.

No injuries have been reported, but after several reports from consumers saying they have found small pieces of glass in their meals, Nestle issued the recalls out of an abundance of caution for consumers’ safety.

The recall is limited to specific production codes of a selection of Nestle’s frozen meals. Here are the products involved.

DiGiorno

There are 4 types of DiGiorno frozen pizzas affected by the recall:

  • DiGiorno Thin & Crispy Spinach and Garlic Pizza
  • DiGiorno Rising Crust Spinach and Mushroom Pizza
  • DiGiorno Pizzeria! Thin Crust Spinach and Mushroom Pizza
  • DiGiorno Pizzeria! Tuscan-Style Chicken Pizza

Lean Cuisine

Here are the 5 Lean Cuisine meals affected by the recall:

  • Lean Cuisine Spinach and Mushroom Pizza
  • Lean Cuisine Spinach, Artichoke & Chicken Panini
  • Lean Cuisine Mushroom Mezzaluna Ravioli
  • Lean Cuisine Spinach Artichoke Ravioli
  • Lean Cuisine Ricotta Cheese and Spinach Ravioli

Stouffer’s

There are 5 Stouffer’s meals affected by the recall:

  • Stouffer’s Vegetable Lasagna Party Size (96oz)
  • Stouffer’s Whole Grain Vegetable Lasagna (10oz)
  • Stouffer’s Vegetable Lasagna Family Size (37oz)
  • Stouffer’s Chicken Lasagna Party Size (96oz)
  • Stouffer’s Spinach Souffle (12oz)

If you have any of these meals in your freezer, you need to compare the package’s product code with the product codes being recalled by Nestle.

Mandatory vs. Voluntary Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides a continually-updated list of any recalls issued for foods and drugs.

If a manufacturer or importer doesn’t voluntarily recall food or a device that is a danger to consumers’ health, the FDA issues a recall order to the manufacturer. If the FDA believes, after issuing the mandatory recall, that the product or food will cause serious harm to consumers, the organization may issue a cease distribution and notification order.

However, most recalls are voluntary, like the Nestle recall. It is the responsibility of manufacturers and distributors to protect the public health and well-being from products that can cause injury, products that are deceiving, or products that are otherwise defective.

Nestle has stated that they are fully cooperating with the FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the company apologizes for any inconvenience the recall causes its customers. If you do have a Nestle brand meal with spinach, be cautious and examine the meal for glass, even if it isn’t on the recall list.

Companies have the responsibility to provide safe products to their consumers. Product liability is a serious legal issue and defective products can lead to severe injuries.
