Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, has reacted to the revelation that Donald Trump was shtupping a porn star a year after he married his third wife, and months after son Barron was born, with a yawn. He told Politico in a podcast:

“We kind of gave him—‘All right, you get a mulligan. You get a do-over here,’”

It seems unfathomable to many that a prominent leader of the moral police would be so forgiving of such an ethically unmoored boor.

I understand forgiveness for the sinner. But Trump isn’t an essentially good man who made a stupid error. He is a walking compendium of every transgression the religious conservative hyperventilates about. He is a cheat, a sexual predator, a serial adulterer, vainglorious and unobservant, a non-church going sinner – who shows no knowledge of biblical morality. He is uncharitable, unforgiving, and lazy. But all of that is excusable to the expedient evangelical – because Trump has promised to give political backing to the evangelicals’ bigotry.

Trump fanboy, Franklin Graham is even more obsequious in his defense of the seemingly indefensible. This ingratiating carbuncle thinks that: “Our country’s got a sin problem.” And incredibly thinks that the answer to the problem is the man whose biography is a continual series of lurches from one depravity to the next.

“We certainly don’t hold him up as the pastor of this country, and he’s not. But I appreciate the fact that the president does have a concern for Christian values, he does have a concern to protect Christians—whether it’s here at home or around the world—and I appreciate the fact that he protects religious liberty and freedom.”

And what of Trump’s tryst with Stormy Daniels? Graham pretends it doesn’t exist, saying there is no reason to believe it. Adding that the reports Trump called some countries “shitholes” were not credible either.

Graham is like the majority of evangelicals who think that rights granted to non-Christians are an attack on Christianity. They despised Obama — one of the most morally pure men ever to be President — because he thought that everyone deserved equal protection under the Constitution.

Beyond his empathy for the LGBT community, white evangelicals couldn’t abide that Obama cared about minorities and even worse — immigrants. The Bible is not a nationalist tract. Jesus didn’t care about countries. To him, we are all God’s children, regardless of our color or nationality.

But white conservative evangelicals are cut from a xenophobic cloth. And make common cause with the basest nationalist elements in America. But even in that comparison, they look bad.

Politically, neo-Nazis and evangelicals are similar. Where they differ is in hypocrisy. As despicable as they are, Neo-Nazis are honest about their mission and live by their principles. Evangelicals, on the other hand, trumpet morality while condoning the rankest sin.
