WHAT HAPPENED TO RIGHT THINKING?

Before I am bombarded by the liberals who may stumble across this article my reference to "right" thinking is not a political one, nor specifying one side or another in any issue. It refers to making correct choices in the best interest of self and society. So, we move on.

My purpose here is to make a comparison of the pros and cons of the political philosophies which predominate in America at present. Those views of course are the "liberal/progressive/Democrat" side and the "conservative/Constitutionalist/Republican" view. The really curious thing about this division now is that it isn't just a topic for polite conversation, an area where gentlepersons can disagree and where healthy debate can take place. Since the 2016 Presidential election, and the upending of the liberal candidates, as well as what appeared to be a broad repudiation of their political views, discussion of political positions has become a sometimes dangerous blood sport. We see reports daily of lifetime friendships ended over political disparity, we see husbands and wives divorcing over who voted for who, and we see, at least on the left/liberal side a dissembling of focus to the point that lives are in jeopardy over expression of political views.

A classic example of this in the last few days news-Tom Brady, 5 time Superbowl winning quarterback of the New England Patriots won the last Superbowl in what could be arguably be the greatest come-back game in the history of football and the greatest Superbowl ever played. He is loved by millions for his formidable skills at his trade, and is very financially successful as well. He is married to a "supermodel" and they live what many would consider a charmed and ideal life. Well, Tom Brady made a politically incorrect move to those on the left. He has a long time acquaintance and friendship with Donald Trump. Now, before the election, this was not an issue that drew any attention. Now, post election Brady is excoriated by trolls from the left that he should publicly sever his relationship with Trump, admit his wrong in associating with "such a person" and in not doing so, must then be subject to the liberal wrath and character assassination which comes defying their demands for politically correct thinking. Now, Brady has entered that zone, where whatever he does is wrong, because he did not disavow Trump. Today he is again excoriated in the Twitterverse and other social media because he quoted Rudyard Kipling in a famous poem about striving for personal success and achievement. He is labeled a racist, as is Kipling by the liberal haters, and excoriated for quoting from such a monster. Where is the common sense? Where is the logic in this?

Enter "Trump Unacceptance Resistance Disorder" (aka-TURD). Some humorist undoubtedly coined this on observing the rush by the left to take a stance of resistance to anything and everything that Donald Trump does, may do, has done, or plans for the future. This resistance comes even before it is know what is being resisted, and turns (pardon the phrase) black to white before the simple merits of what is being considered is even on the table.

Example: Pres. Trump appointed Judge Neil Gorsuch of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals of the Federal Courts to fill the vacancy in the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). Gorsuch was appointed about 10 years ago to the Court of Appeals and required a senate review and confirmation. He received that after review with a unanimous vote on both sides of the aisle to confirm him as an appropriate judge candidate.

Now, on his nomination to SCOTUS the left and all of their politically controlled minions have come out of the woodwork to tell us why Neil Gorsuch is absolutely unqualified to be a SCOTUS Justice, is the devil incarnate, and despite his prior unanimous accolade and a sterling record of service in the federal courts since cannot be in any way qualified to serve on the high court. Because his appointment is now a political football (pardon the Tom Brady reference), the left believes that it can do a complete 180 degree turn in how they evaluate Gorsuch, without any evidence of any sort to do so, and that is OK. Doesn't matter what damage they may do to his reputation, his family, or the nation, if it serves their political purpose, the savage him they will. Now both sides have been guilty of this kind of conduct but it is much more common on the left.

So what are the premises of the left and the right-and how do they compare. It is necessary to generalize some here, and there are not doubt exceptions to the conclusions I will state, but you must keep in mind this represents the two sides which may well represent only 20% on each end of the population spectrum with the middle 50% being apolitical (the non-voters) and the other 10% characterizing themselves as independent.

Lets start with looking at the Trump executive orders  entered since he took office to see where the "Right" is headed.

1. Minimizing the Burdens on Citizens of the ACA-suspending penalties for non-participation and other financial costs.

2. Expediting Environmental Reviews and Approvals for High-Profile Infrastructure Projects. This order was aimed at pushing projects for infrastructure repair and replacement to implementation without delay. The effect, creating jobs, fixing an aging infrastructure of roads, bridges, etc.

3. Three orders establishing three Department of Justice task forces to fight drug cartels, reduce violent crime and reduce attacks against police.

4. An order directing the Treasury secretary to review the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial regulatory law. This act is viewed as unduly stringent, and prevents business and the development of small local banks.

5. A memorandum instructing the Labor Department to delay implementing an Obama rule requiring financial professionals who are giving advice on retirement, and who charge commissions, to put their client's interests first. This is seen as a over-regulation situation, and is a review to determine if the regulation suggested is necessary or cost effective.

6. An order instructing agencies that whenever they introduce a regulation, they must first abolish two others. This is a regulatory economy provision aimed at what the President perceives as a highly over regulated nation, where compliance costs are hurting the economy.

7. A memorandum to restructure the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council. This is largely a housekeeping matter, creating better communication between agencies on national security issues.

8. A memorandum directing the Secretary of Defense to draw up a plan within 30 days to defeat ISIS. This is a straight forward response to the lack of action of the prior Administration to end the threat of ISIS both locally in the middle east and world wide.

9. An order to lengthen the ban on administration officials working as lobbyists. There is now a 5 year-ban on officials becoming lobbyists after they leave government, and a lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government. This is part of the "drain the swamp" initiative of the Trump administration to end corruption in government by preventing prior officials from profiting on their experience to sell their contacts and connections to entities seeking to influence government.

10. An executive order imposing a 120-day suspension of the refugee program and a 90-day ban on travel to the U.S. from citizens of seven terror hot spots: Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and Sudan. The most hotly contested of the orders issues, this one is in the courts, where there is hot dispute on rulings to date being inconsistent with legal precedent, and imposed by activist judges to pursue political agendas. The media and the left have misrepresented this order as a "Muslim ban", inferring that it prevents any Muslim immigration ever, when in fact it is a temporary suspension from the seven countries while vetting procedures are developed to protect us from hostile immigrants.

11. Two multi-pronged orders on border security and immigration enforcement including: the authorization of a U.S.-Mexico border wall; the stripping of federal grant money to sanctuary cities; hiring 5,000 more Border Patrol agents; ending “catch-and-release” policies for illegal immigrants; and reinstating local and state immigration enforcement partnerships. This is basically self explanatory and is aimed at enforcing immigration laws on the books which were ignored by the Obama administration.

12. A memorandum calling for a 30-day review of military readiness. As stated a current determination of our military ability to respond if needed.

13. Two orders reviving the Keystone XL pipeline and Dakota Access piplines. He also signed three other related orders that would: expedite the environmental permitting process for infrastructure projects related to the pipelines; direct the Commerce Department to streamline the manufacturing permitting process; and give the Commerce Department 180 days to maximize the use of U.S. steel in the pipeline. This puts back into construction and completion the two projects stopped by the Obama administration on environmental grounds after agency approvals for both had been entered.

14. An order to reinstate the so-called "Mexico City Policy" – a ban on federal funds to international groups that perform abortions or lobby to legalize or promote abortion. The policy was instituted in 1984 by President Reagan, but has gone into and out of effect depending on the party in power in the White House. An economy provision to prevent the use of federal money to perform abortions or promote abortion outside the borders of the US.

15.A notice that the U.S. will begin withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. Trump called the order "a great thing for the American worker. The administration viewed these agreements of value to all the participants except the US, and will renegotiate or withdraw from them to balance the terms.

16. An order imposing a hiring freeze for some federal government workers as a way to shrink the size of government. This excludes the military. Aimed at reducing the size of a bloated federal government, this lets attrition lower the overall employment load of government.

17. An order that directs federal agencies to ease the “regulatory burdens” of ObamaCare. It orders agencies to “waive, defer, grant exemptions from, or delay the implementation of any provision or requirement” of ObamaCare that imposes a “fiscal burden on any State or a cost, fee, tax, penalty, or regulatory burden on individuals, families, healthcare providers, health insurers, patients, recipients of healthcare services, purchasers of health insurance, or makers of medical devices, products, or medications.”

Trump is also in the midst of working with Congress to reduce corporate income taxes, and personal income taxes, and simplify the tax code.

On foreign policy, the Trump administration has taken a position that America will be looking first at what the effect of any trade agreements are for us, and their fairness to all concerned. We will not be signing one sided agreement aiding others and costing the American workers.

I have a couple of questions on some of these orders, but nothing critical, nor justifying riots or protests. Conversely, lets look at the left's view.

OK, now that we have kind of summarized what the new administration has been up to lets take a look at the left, and what policies they are adopting in the face of the Trump administration.

1. The Democrat party through its main mouthpiece Chuck Schumer has stated that it will put up a resistance to any actions by the new administration, before even knowing what those might be. This has been carried out in "slow walking" all of the Trump nominations for his cabinet and other positions requiring confirmation by the Senate. By a month into the Obama administration all of his cabinet members had been confirmed and he was fully operational. Trump has approximately half his cabinet approved, and games like holding votes at 2:00 a.m., and 24 hour filibusters knowing they will not prevent but only delay confirmation has become the rule by the Democrat minority.

2. Democrat elected officials continue to represent the President as "an illegitimate president", and over 60 members of Congress boycotted the Inauguration Ceremonies. A unprecedented action from so many elected officials. Others before the President even had time to warm his chair began calling for his impeachment, predicting he would not fill his term of office, Maxine Watters, John Lewis and others lead the screech about Trump, with little or no factual support for their allegations.

3. Democrat elected officials and former officials are encouraging protest and disruption of all Trump events and projects. This is being practiced across the philosophical board by the left with riots to prevent free speech by conservative speakers, etc. Since the election, riots, violence, property damage, personal injury and the like have been enacted and supported across the liberal left.

4. Thousands of women, principally on the east coast held marches asserting that the Trump administration was focused on taking away "women's rights". This despite the fact that no such assertions have been made by the administration. These Congressionally supported and well financed and organized events bore the marks of billionaire George Soros and his prior attempts to sew unrest and support anarchy leading to socialism.

5. The left supports "Black Lives Matter" another Soros/far left funded organization pushing the fallicy that police in America are targeting black men and murdering them in law enforcement settings. Despite there being no empirical evidence for this position. It began with the false narrative from Ferguson MI, that Michael Brown was murdered by the police, shot with his hands up. Impartial autopsies demonstrated that this was absolutely false, that Brown was attacking the police office and trying to get his gun when he was shot. None the less, BLM went into America calling for violence against the police. The result was a drastic increase in violence against officers from murders to assaults. It also had the effect of creating an environment for police where their own safety had to be watched so closely it effected their efficiency doing their jobs.

6. The left has howled outrageously over the issue of immigration. The would have there be open borders, and any immigrants allowed to come to America without condition, and then be supported by American taxpayers if they come without personal means. The even object to reasonable vetting of those from hostile nations. Many claiming to be "refugees" are potentially hostile immigrants coming here to seek to overthrow democracy and install a theocracy of Islam. The liberal left fights all efforts to protect the US from this on "humanitarian grounds" with vague statement like "that's just not American" and the like. The left even object to the deportation of convicted illegal immigrant felons. People who have come here unlawfully, then commited and been convicted of felonies here, they want to keep and support. The only explanation for this is the strategy of the left seeking to obtain a plurality of voters by providing entitlements to the immigrating welfare classes. They do this without concern for its harm to American citizens as crime victims, economic victims, and push victim hood as the defense of choice to anyone not getting what they want in America regardless of their level of effort.

7. The left is so disingenuous. If there has been one centerpiece of the Trump campaign and administration, it is focus on American working classes and improving their lot. The left now trumpets this as Trump's war on workers. They twist every effort made to open the economy as just another give away to the rich, and disparage any positive good it offers to Americas working classes. Quite frankly though, fewer and fewer are believing the litany of these clear lies.

8. Finally, the last discussed here as a tool of the left is the national media. The media always having had a penchant for the left, has been the handmaiden of the left in despicable terms really since the Clinton's, but with stunning clarity since the first Obama election. From day one of Obama, the media took up the sword and shield and protected him and his administration by action, inaction, and completely blurring the line between opinion reporting and news reporting. The left in Hollywood have supported the media, giving them opportunities to push the liberal ideas. The media became active supporters by skewing the news to favor their political favorites. Opinion became fact, and fact was only reported if it favored their view. The Journalistic Standards and Ethics which used to be taught in higher education were thrown out the window, and laughable justifications were made for some one like "fill in the blank for a conservative" needed to be reported differently, attacked, caused to fail, etc. Money and jobs like the media and the political establishment, and bias is rampant and reported as fact. As a result of this and the public not being as dumb as the press thought, readership and ratings are down, thankfully, and that trend will likely continue unless the standards and ethics are returned to.

The party of "tolerance" and "social justice" seems only tolerant or just when the view being asserted is their own. They support their "social warrior" view of society, that they must control speech, thought, and policy, and know better for all those other Americans out there who in reality would like to seek their own "pursuit of happiness" without big government looking over the shoulder.

What's needed? First, an end to the divisiveness. The parties need to work in the best interest of the nation (that is what they were elected for, not for self enrichment, or minority representation). As Trump has begun, he represents a change for sane spending in government, limited size of government, and representation of all Americans, not just the hyphenated Americans who claim their real allegiance to some other culture or nation. That is what has always made America great, is people coming here an assimilating to our culture, not demanding we change to suit theirs. God Bless America, there is room for all loyal Americans and loyal to America immigrants, but we must work together for honest common sense outcomes, not partisan desires.
