FRANCE TO RETURN 37 SKULLS OF ALGERIAN MILITANTS EXHIBITED IN THE MUSEUM OF MANKIND IN PARIS

The Museum of Mankind in Paris holds 37 Skulls of Algerian Militants who had revolted against the French occupation forces in 1849. These skulls were taken by the French army after having defeated the revolution of the Biskra region. They were then exhibited in the museum as a sort of racial anatomic specimen.

The Algerians had to wait over a century to take back their country; after having sacrificed more than a million martyr in the revolution of 1954-1962. However, even after 55 years of independence, the skulls are still in the same place, despite the racist aspect of their exhibition.

On Wednesday December 6th 2017, the French president Emmanuel Macron declared that he is willing to return the 37 skulls of the Algerian militants to the Algerian government.

During his election campaign, Mr. Macron qualified the colonization of foreign lands in the 19th century as a crime against humanity.
