Now running full HTTPS using Let’s Encrypt Beta

HTTPS is the protocol used for encrypting your connection between the web browser and the website you are visiting (usually symbolised by a green padlock in the URL bar). Typically it has been used for online transactions, but there is an increasing push for it to be used across the web to anonymise internet usage, reduce surveillance and prevent phishing.

Two days ago the long-awaited Let’s Encrypt Beta rolled out to the public (endorsed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation). Having set up a new VPS (Virtual Private Server) to host Usayd.com it seemed like the opportune time to switch to full-encryption. I’m extremely impressed with how easy it was to set up! By reducing the barriers to encryption this project will undoubtedly equip many to implement HTTPS across the web.

Anecdotally, I attended a Crypto-Party some time ago and everyone was using a public WiFi Network. At the end of the session we were shown how logins to Gmail and other accounts could be easily hijacked on an unencrypted network. You probably know that Gmail itself forces HTTPS – so be aware that the use of public networks (including those with paywalls) is still insecure. If you need to use them, be sure to connect to a VPN (Virtual Private Network) first as this will hide your traffic from the open network.
