Here we have another beautiful Flower Photograph of a bright yellow daffodil. It looks much like any other daffodil photograph. However, there's a bit more here than meets the eye. The fact of the matter is that this flower, while looking like it's in a vase against a studio backdrop, is actually still outside and alive.
It as a cold and windy spring day when these gorgeous flowers emerged from the ground and began blooming. Since they have a limited window of time where they look amazing before the wind ravages them, it was time to grab the camera and get to work photographing them.
Finding a place to set up my tripod in the mud was less than pleasant but absolutely necessary if I was to get down to their level. I also needed my cable release to ensure I didn't bump the camera or the tripod accidentally and ruin my shot. I went for the macro setting on my lens so that I could get in close and fill the frame with the yellow petals exploding in front of me.
To darken the background, I used flash. It focused the light up front on the flower I wanted to see instead of adding details in the background which I didn't want at all.
The real trick behind this photo was getting the timing right with the wind so that the flower was stationary for the full shot. I didn't want the slightest amount of blur at all. This is not easy to do during an early Idaho spring. There are gusts and breezes all the time.
After several failed attempts to get this shot, I finally clicked the shutter when the wind was still and the flower was in focus. The result was this very contrasted version of a daffodil flower.
